Scream 8 is moving forward, and the next chapter of the Ghostface saga might have a very familiar face behind the camera. Courteney Cox, who has played Gale Weathers in all seven Scream movies, says she would be interested in directing Scream 8. Meanwhile, Isabel May, who made her franchise debut as Sidney Prescott’s daughter Tatum Evans in Scream 7, has already teased where she would like to see her character go next.
Scream 8 already has writers attached. Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, best known for their work on Poker Face, are writing the screenplay for the next installment, following the franchise-record box office success of Scream 7.
Kevin Williamson, who directed Scream 7, has previously said he intends to step back from the next movie. Now Cox is volunteering for the director’s chair.
Courteney Cox wants to direct Scream 8
While promoting Evil Genius at the Toronto International Film Festival, Cox was asked by Deadline whether she would consider directing a Scream movie. Her answer was pretty enthusiastic.
“I think I should, honestly. Nobody knows more about that movie than I do. I mean, and the creator, and Wes Craven, and the writers, and everybody who’s been in it. But I think it’d be great and fun and a good publicity thing. Get on it.”
There is currently no indication that Cox has actually been offered the job. Her comments are simply her expressing an interest in directing a future Scream movie. Still, the timing is interesting. Scream 8 is already being written, and Cox has been building her résumé as a director for years. She directed the 2014 comedy drama Just Before I Go, as well as the television movie TalhotBlond and several episodes of Cougar Town. Her latest feature as a director is Evil Genius, which stars Patricia Arquette and David Harbour.
So Cox wouldn’t be completely new to directing if she were to take over Scream 8, and there is something appropriate about Gale Weathers wanting to direct a Scream movie.

Cox made her debut as Gale in Wes Craven’s original Scream in 1996 and has returned for every sequel since then. That gives her a unique perspective on the franchise. She has worked with Craven, Williamson, the writers of the recent sequels, and most of the major cast members who have crossed Ghostface’s path over the past three decades.
Cox’s comment that she thinks she should direct because “nobody knows more about that movie than I do” might sound like a very Gale Weathers thing to say, but she does have three decades of experience with the franchise behind it. And if she really does want the job, she might as well make the pitch publicly.
Isabel May wants to explore Tatum after Scream 7
While Cox is thinking about what she could do behind the camera, Isabel May has been thinking about what could happen to her character Tatum Evans (Sidney Prescott’s daughter) after Scream 7. Speaking with USA Today, May revealed that she already knows at least a little about the ideas being discussed for Scream 8. In fact, she may have even had an influence on them.
“I know a little bit. Not too much. I may have participated in influencing it a little bit, with one little thing — very minor, nothing important necessarily. So I’m an itty-bitty, little pinky toe involved.”
May was careful not to make it sound like she knows exactly where the story is going. She also said there is plenty being developed that she isn’t aware of. But she does know what she would like to explore if Tatum returns.
“It’d be fun to further explore Tatum and see her post-Ghostface. … Her mother is someone who’s put on a pedestal for being a brave, fearless person, and [Tatum] doesn’t think she’s that. As the story evolves, and she tries to take some sort of power into her own hands and be useful, she discovers that she is capable and has a resolve that she clearly didn’t have at the beginning, and armor.”
Tatum has survived the same kind of nightmare that defined her mother’s life, but she has also experienced it from the perspective of someone who grew up knowing exactly what Ghostface did to Sidney. May believes that survival comes with a cost.
“You have to grieve and mourn and miss the people that you loved forever, and now question everyone in your life forever, too. It’s a generational curse that’s just been handed down to her.”

What do we know about Scream 8?
Scream 8 is currently in development at Spyglass, with Poker Face showrunners Lilla and Nora Zuckerman writing the screenplay. Kevin Williamson previously said that he expected to step back from the franchise after directing Scream 7. He has also said that he’s excited to see what another storyteller can do with the series.
Cox has now expressed interest in directing, although she has not been announced as the director.
May, meanwhile, has expressed interest in returning as Tatum and says she knows at least a little about the ideas being considered for the next movie.
Neve Campbell is also central to the continuing story. During production on Scream 7, Campbell reportedly brought Williamson an idea for the next chapter, which Williamson said people responded to quickly.
So while there is still plenty we don’t know about Scream 8, the pieces are beginning to come together.
