Spyglass Media and Paramount seem to have learned their lesson after leaving Neve Campbell out of Scream VI, as the franchise star has made it clear that she will definitely be returning for the upcoming Scream 8.
Sidney’s Back for Scream 8
Campbell told the AP that she’s got Scream 8 “in the pipeline,” but wouldn’t drop any details, other than she’ll be reprising her role as Sidney.
“You know I can’t tell you anything about Scream 8,” Cambelle said. “I’ll be in it.“
Campbell played Sidney in every Scream movie until Scream VI, when a pay dispute kept her on the sidelines. She returned for Scream 7, which dropped Melissa Barrera after Spyglass Media fired the actress after a few pro-Palestinian social media posts that it deemed anti-Semitic. Jenna Ortega didn’t return either.
Despite setting a box-office record for the series, grossing over $213 million worldwide, Scream 7 also received the worst reviews of the entire franchise. But money talks, so naturally, Scream 8 is underway.
But Should She?
Scream 7 introduced Sidney’s husband, Mark (Joel McHale), and daughter, Tatum (Isobel May), with the new Ghostface killer targeting Sidney’s daughter. A real family affair.
Although it’s hard to imagine Scream without Sidney (her presence was certainly missed in Scream VI), there’s an element of diminishing returns as it’s clear they’re not going to kill her off. And if they did…would that be a welcome twist or simply piss off the fanbase even more? There’s a part of me that enjoyed believing that Sidney had finally escaped the Ghostface horrors and was living a peaceful life with her family.
Who Will Write Scream 8?
Lilla and Nora Zuckerman will serve as the writers of Scream 8. The pair are best known as the showrunners of Poker Face, the mystery crime drama created by Rian Johnson and starring Natasha Lyonne. They’ve also worked on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Suits, Fringe, Prodigal Son, as well as the pilot for Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, which the studio passed on.
