No, David Fincher (FIGHT CLUB, SEVEN) isn’t making a movie about the doughy guy who achieved minor online celebrity for squeezing himself into a home-made TRON costume — Fincher might be developing a Facebook movie, but he’s not totally nutty for the net memes.
This is about the TRON sequel’s director Joe Kosinski and his sci-fi project OBLIVION, which Fincher is producing. Not based on the popular fantasy RPG videogames, this is an original concept first being done as an illustrated novel from Radical Publishing.
According to THR, the story involves “a battle-damaged soldier who, assigned to a desolate planet after a court-martial, patrols the bleak landscape in an effort to destroy the last vestiges of a primitive alien race. When a mysterious traveler arrives unexpectedly, their lives become inextricably linked as they are forced to question everything they know about this world and themselves.”
Kosinski says it started when he was “looking to make a science fiction film that I could do on a budget. It’s grown since then, but it’s intended to be a very spare science fiction film, with a small cast but big ideas and big landscapes.” Which, along with the story description, calls to mind the WWII classic HELL IN THE PACIFIC (or more bluntly, ENEMY MINE). But all that will have to wait until Kosinski gets the lightcycles back on the grid for TRON LEGACY.
