SHUTTER ISLAND, probably my most anticipated film of the year thus far. Granted it’s only February, but hey, if Scorsese was rockin’ a sequel to AGE OF INNOCENCE in the summer, you bet your blistered-ass I’d be there!
So it comes with great honor to share with you all a pair of new clips from the film, which is inspired by the Dennis Lehane tome of the same name.
In the first clip entitled “Arriving,” we’re treated to some of the sprawling landscapes of the island itself, concluding with a gorgeous sweeping shot as only Scorsese could achieve. Also, we get to see John Carroll Lynch (FARGO, ZODIAC) decked in a State Trooper uni, which is always fun.
In the second clip, entitled “Sense of Calm,” watch Sir Ben Kingsley scare the piss out of an already disturbed Leo DiCaprio. Kingsley’s intimidating on his own, so when he starts rambling about sadistic paintings and intense hydro-therapy techniques, it’s only right that Leo get a bit worked up. Mark Ruffalo’s cold-chilling though!
With adapted screenplay credit to Laeta Kalogridis (BATTLE ANGEL, NIGHT WATCH), SHUTTER ISLAND takes place in 1954, as up-and-coming U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Boston’s Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. He’s been pushing for an assignment on the island for personal reasons, but before long he wonders whether he hasn’t been brought there as part of a twisted plot by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical to illegal to downright sinister. Teddy’s shrewd investigating skills soon provide a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he suspects would break the case wide open. As a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland, more dangerous criminals “escape” in the confusion, and the puzzling, improbable clues multiply, Teddy begins to doubt everything – his memory, his partner, even his own sanity.
Emily Mortimer, Jackie Earle Haley, Michelle Williams, Max von Sydow, Patricia Clarkson, Elias Koteas, Ted Levine, and Ruby Jerins round out the cast.
