Out of the frying pan and into the fire

As the saying goes, if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. The high-pressure world of food preparation has been shown in shows like Hell’s Kitchen with Gordon Ramsey and The Bear. But now there’s a thriller in the vein of Whiplash set in the culinary world that is assembling its cooks. Variety reports that the film, called Tyrant, has added Demi Moore to the cast that already sports Charlize Theron and Julia Garner. The upcoming film is set to come from Amazon MGM and is said to be a “high-stakes thriller set within New York City’s elite fine dining scene.”

Thriller girls

This particular cast is doing a lot in the thriller genre as of late. Moore gained acclaim and Academy Award recognition with her turn as an aging star in The Substance. Meanwhile, Garner starred in Zach Cregger’s hit horror film of last year, Weapons, which also got Oscar attention and earned a Best Supporting Actress win for Amy Madigan. And Charlize Theron is starring in the upcoming nature thriller Apex.

A genre movie that has been described as “Free Solo meets Silence of the Lambs,” Apex sees Theron taking on the role of a rock climber and adrenaline junkie who finds out that nature isn’t the only dangerous element out to get her when she sets out on an expedition in the wild. Egerton’s character is said to be a psychopath stalking his human prey… with Theron’s character being his prey. The title is a play on an apex being the top or highest part of something (like a cliff) and a particularly dangerous predator in the wild.

Theron is producing the film with Dawn Olmstead, Beth Kono, and AJ Dix under their recently-launched Secret Menu banner. Kormákur is producing for RVK Productions. Other producers include Ian Bryce and Chernin Entertainment’s Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and David Ready. Apex has been Rated R for some strong violence, grisly images, nudity, and language.

Meanwhile, Tyrant will be written and directed by David Weil (Hunters, Invasion). The film will be produced by Picture Company partners Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona. It will also be produced by Theron and her Secret Menu partners Beth Kono and A.J. Dix. Weil will also produce with producing partner Natalie Laine Williams, and Stan Wlodkowski will serve as executive producer. Weil’s script is based on a story he conceived with Cody Behan.
