The great debate

Demi Moore simply states, “AI is here.” There is a lot of pushback against the learning technology that gets more and more threatening to artists as it advances. AI actors have already started to infiltrate the industry as Val Kilmer, along with his and his family’s blessing, has been recreated using AI programs for As Deep As the Grave. And recently, the Golden Globes announced that AI actors, like Tilly Norwood, will not be eligible for consideration.

Organizers said, “Submissions in which a performance is substantially generated or created by artificial intelligence are not eligible. The use of AI for technical or cosmetic enhancements (such as de-aging, aging, or visual modifications) may be permissible, provided the underlying performance remains that of the credited individual and AI does not replace or materially alter the performer’s work.“

Demi Moore says it’s a losing battle

According to Variety, Demi Moore was present for the Cannes Film Festival jury press conference, where she was asked about her thoughts on AI. While there are Hollywood figures who are naturally opposed to it, some are in favor the tech, but Moore sees it as an inescapable reality, so a compromise needs to be made. She explained,

Wow, that’s a big question. I think the reality is that to resist — I always feel that against-ness breeds against-ness. AI is here. And so to fight it is to fight something that is a battle that we will lose. So to find ways in which we can work with it I think is a more valuable path to take.”

She adds, “To your question of, are we doing enough to protect ourselves? I don’t know the answer to that. And so my inclination would be to say probably not.” She continues to say that “there’s beautiful aspects to being able to utilize.” She expounded, “The truth is there really isn’t anything to fear because what it can never replace is what true art comes from, which is not the physical, it comes from the soul. It comes from the spirit of each and every one of us sitting here, to each and every one of us who creates every day. And that they can never recreate through something that is technical.”
