It's taken over a decade to get a big-screen adaptation of the Uncharted video-game franchise off the ground, and during that time, we've seen a revolving door of directors attached to the project, including David O. Russell, Neil Burger, Seth Gordon, Shawn Levy, Dan Trachtenberg, and Travis Knight, but production finally got underway last year with Ruben Fleischer at the helm and Tom Holland starring as famed treasure hunter Nathan Drake.
Although Uncharted isn't slated to hit theaters until next year, Tom Holland already worries that he might have made a mistake with his performance. In a revealing interview with GQ, Holland said that there were times when he was more preoccupied with looking cool than concentrating on his performance.
As soon as you start worrying about ‘Do I look good in this shot?’ acting becomes something other than playing a character. I think there are elements of my performance in Uncharted where I kind of fell under that spell of being ‘I want to look good now. I want this to be my cool moment.’ I had to play this very tough, very stoic guy – basically be Mark Wahlberg. My character is supposed to be a fucking action hero in this moment!
"Look, I haven’t seen it, so I don’t know if I succeeded in that," Holland continued. "But it was an important lesson learned, because, at times, it was less about land a mark and go through this scene and more about land a mark, stand like this and see my bulging biceps… It was a mistake and is something that I will probably never do again." While I doubt that many in the audience will notice any so-called mistakes that Tom Holland believes he may have made, it's always nice to hear an actor get candid about a performance which we haven't even seen yet.
Uncharted will chronicle the early days of Nathan Drake, and is also set to star Mark Wahlberg as Victor "Sully" Sullivan, "an American treasure hunter, fortune seeker and businessman, as well as a friend, mentor and father figure to Drake." Antonio Banderas, Sophie Ali, and Tati Gabrielle are also set to star in the film, which is slated to hit theaters on February 11, 2022.
