Well, it finally happened. A major studio has had enough with The Asylum’s blatant pilferage!
In an exclusive from TMZ of all places, it seems Universal has filed suit against The Asylum for its mockbuster AMERICAN BATTLESHIP, as it clearly riding the BATTLESHIP promotional wave. Universal staked $30 million in adverts alone to help promote BATTLESHIP, and The Asylum is using that onslaught to raise awareness of its shameless ripoff, which comes out on DVD only 4 days after “the original” hits theaters.
While I could drone on about the legal wranglings, it’s more amusing to note The Asylum’s rebuttal, thanking Universal for even more press.
“The Global Asylum has promoted the feature film American Battleship for nearly a year while Universal raised no concerns.”
Global Asylum continued:
“The timing of Universal’s recently filed lawsuit coincides with mixed reviews of its big-budget film, Battleship — the first movie based on a board game since Clue. Looking for a scapegoat, or more publicity, for its pending box-office disaster, the executives at Universal filed this lawsuit in fear of a repeat of the box office flop, John Carter of Mars. The Universal action is wholly without merit and we will vigorously defend their claims in Court. Nonetheless, we appreciate the publicity.”
Gotta love that shite! The Asylum makes no bones about their product, proud and persistent. I expect them to keep on keeping on. Why wouldn’t they?
