Neato news for you online gaming addicts who are looking for a little classic horror on your monitor: Universal Studios and SEE Virtual Worlds are teaming up to bring us a massive multiplayer game where players become their own version of monster-hunter Van Helsing.

The game, tentatively known as “the Universal Monsters project”, is due to hit late next year. Some of the characters making up the Universal Monsters collection include the Hunchback of Notre Dame, the Phantom of the Opera, Dracula, the Invisible Man, the Mummy and the Creature From the Black Lagoon.

Entropia Universe, a massive multiplayer online virtual universe, is where the Universal Monsters will reside. Entropia Universe has nearly 1 million registered users in 200 countries who play in virtual worlds that use “real money trading,” or RMT, in lieu of subscription fees…

I’m no online gamer – or a gamer at all, in fact – but this is cool enough news that I might have to delve into this ghoulish world, or at the very least, give it a test drive. What do you think?

Wonder if there will be a “play with Kate Beckinsale” function…
