The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker certainly have their critics, but the Star Wars sequel trilogy has opened the franchise up to an entirely new generation of fans, just as the original and prequel trilogies once did. Once The Rise of Skywalker concluded the Skywalker Saga, almost all of the Star Wars projects that followed have taken place near or around the original and prequel trilogies, but Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has said that upcoming Star Wars movies will return to the sequel era.

While speaking with Empire at Star Wars Celebration, which happens to be underway right now in Anaheim, California, Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that the sequel era will be explored further in upcoming Star Wars movies.

We’re moving further beyond the existing sequels as we look to our movie space. The sequel era] is what we talk a lot about in terms of where we’re going with our movies, and just how far out from that we’ll go. That’s very much the space we’re concentrating on.

As much as I love seeing familiar Star Wars characters pop up again, I’m ready for Star Wars to head toward its future again. The next Star Wars movie on the slate will be directed by Taika Waititi, who is also co-writing the script alongside Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Kathleen Kennedy recently said that the movie is aiming for a late 2023 release. Other upcoming Star Wars movies include Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron and another project being developed by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and written by Michael Waldron. The trilogy by The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson is still kicking, but Kennedy said that it won’t be happening anytime soon as Johnson is busy with other projects at the moment.

Speaking of Star Wars, the latest installment of the franchise just debuted on Disney+. You can check out the first two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi on the streaming service right now, and be sure to check out a review from our own Alex Maidy. What Star Wars era would you like to see explored further on the big screen?
