news must be slow if we’re writing about VAMPIRE ACADEMY! An adaptation of the popular book series was announced back in 2010, but the thing slunk into the shadows soon after, making nary a peep to indicate that it was still being developed.

Looks like the sucker is still going strong, however. On the film’s official Facebook page, it was announced that director Mark Waters has joined the ACADEMY. Waters is best known for bringing MEAN GIRLS to the big screen in 2004; since then he’s directed THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES , GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST and MR. POPPER’S PENGUINS. Yeah, super exciting.

What may be of interest is the fact that Mark’s brother Daniel has written the screenplay. Daniel Waters is responsible for writing HEATHERS, which still resonates today, as well as BATMAN RETURNS and DEMOLITION MAN. Perhaps he’s going to give VAMPIRE ACADEMY some much needed bite.

Based on the book by Richelle Mead, VAMPIRE ACADEMY goes like this: Rose Hathaway is a dhampir, half human/half vampire and guardian of the Moroi, a race of peaceful and magical mortal vampires who can walk in the daylight, survive by feeding off willing blood donors, grow old and die. Hidden deep in the forests of Montana is St. Vladimir’s Academy, where Moroi and dhampirs learn to take their place in Moroi society. Rose must master her inherited abilities as a dhampir and earn the approval of the Royal Council, as guardian to Princess Lissa, her best friend and sole heir of one of the twelve Royal families of Moroi.
