Visually stunning trailer for Samsara, the first film to be shot entirely in 70mm

We throw around the term “visually stunning” quite a bit and oftentimes for films that don’t quite fit the phrase, but every now and again there are some films that really live up to it.  SAMSARA, the new docu-drama from Ron Fricke is an amazing feast for your eyeballs, one that will likely leave you with a “wow” expression dripping from your face.  The film is labeled as a “non-narrative” film that explores “humanity’s relationship to the eternal,” according to Fricke, who also directed the similarly themed CHRONOS and BARAKA.

Get ready for eyegasms:

Here’s a brief synopsis:

Filmed over a period of five years in twenty-five countries on five continents, and shot on 70mm film, Samsara transports us to the varied worlds of sacred grounds, disaster zones, industrial complexes, and natural wonders.

I’m not sure how I feel about a “non-narrative” film, but I’ve seen all of Terrance Malick’s films and they come close, so there’s no reason not to give this one a shot.

SAMSARA opens in theaters on August 23, 2012.
