As disappointed as I was that PAN’S LABYRINTH lost Best Foreign-Language Film back in 2006, I could never hate on Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck and his amazing film THE LIVES OF OTHERS for taking the prize in its stead.
So it came as wonderful news to hear that Von Donnersmarck is back on THE TOURIST, a spy thriller which also happens to star Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp.
According to Variety, Von Donnersmarck had left the project last fall over “creative differences” very shortly after joining the picture. During that interim period, the film had been eyed by many top talents including Alfonso Cuaron (which would’ve been awesome). And it wasn’t just directors that were circling overhead. The film apparently was originally looking at Tom Cruise for the male lead before he took off to do KNIGHT & DAY, and then Sam “I’m rumored to be in every movie” Worthington before finally and somewhat surprisingly going to Johnny Depp (“surprisingly” because Depp was expected to make his next film at Disney with either PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4 or THE LONE RANGER according to Variety). In the months since that announcement, it seems Von Donnersmarck and the money men have squashed whatever “creative differences” had developed. Or maybe they’re all just happy Depp’s now on board.
THE TOURIST, looking at a 2011 release, is a remake of the 2006 French thriller ANTHONY ZIMMER, about “an American tourist (Depp) drawn into a web of intrigue by a female Interpol agent (Jolie) who is attempting to locate a criminal who was once her lover.”
