Von Trier’s next…

With Danish auteur Lars Von Trier’s ANTICHRIST fast approaching limited release (Oct. 23), Variety is reporting his next project will be the psychological disaster flick MELANCHOLIA.

Directing his own script, Von Trier warns of his $7.5 million English language film, there will be “no more happy endings.”

And I officially just got chills!

The Zentropa production is gearing up for a 2010 summer shoot in Europe, and its story apparently revolves around a giant planet called Melancholia looming harmfully too close to Earth (as seen in the press release image to the right).

As high a concept this film seems to be, Zentropa co-funder Peter Aalaek Jensen assured his use of special effects will be allocated far less than a huge studio flick.

And just because this a genre flick it doesn’t mean Lars won’t lend his own personal touch and unique visual artistry. You know he will!

I’m still more excited to see ANTICHRIST, which still tops my must see list of the year. But I’m damn interested to see how Von Trier subverts a well known formula-type flick.  What do you think?
