The Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig starring alien invasion thriller, conveniently titled THE INVASION, is a summer tentpole and with any self-respecting tentpole, there’s a minimum number of shit required to blow up and mass audiences can check at least seventy percent of their brain at the door. Good tentpoles are sprinkled with enough artistic flare (via character development and story details) to tax just about thirty percent of one’s brain. According to the folks at Collider.com, Warner Bros. took a look at an early cut of the extra-terrestrial infiltration epic and noted that there was entirely too much “talking” and entirely too much artsy fartsy crap that was threatening to tax a good fifty percent of an audience’s mental capacity. Fearing immense loss of revenue, they brought in a directing duo who they knew could adequately balance commerce (i.e. shit blowing up) with art (i.e. artsy fartsy) for mass consumption – the Wachowski bros. – and they not only re-wrote two-thirds of the film but brought in their trusty directing sidekick James McTiegue to put on the finishing directing touches. So, two Wachowski films before 2008? Just maybe.
