Writer / illustrator Hajime Isayama certainly had a winning idea when he began putting together his manga series ATTACK ON TITAN back in 2009. During the seven years of the manga's run 60 million copies have been printed, there have been multiple novel and manga spin-offs, a television anime series has been created, and a two-part live action adaptation was released in 2015.
The idea that has captured the imaginations of so many readers and viewers is
set in a world where humanity lives in cities surrounded by enormous walls; a defense against the Titans, gigantic humanoids that eat humans seemingly without reason.
The live action adaptation was how ATTACK ON TITAN first came to my attention, and even though I haven't watched the movies yet I was awestruck by the clips I saw of the Titans – "giant, creepy looking people with no nipples or genitals" – rampaging through scenes. I find it hard to imagine a major Hollywood studio basing a film around creatures that look like that, but apparently Warner Bros. has some interest in doing so.
Warner Bros. is currently in negotiations to obtain the feature rights to make their own version of ATTACK ON TITAN with producer David Heyman. Heyman and the studio have had a lot of success together, collaborating on FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM and the HARRY POTTER series.
We'll have to wait and see how this turns out, but I am definitely interested in finding out more about ATTACK ON TITAN after the glimpses I've seen of the 2015 live action adaptation. I really need to get around to watching that.
