The cat’s out of the bag! Disney is developing an animated adaptation of Erin Hunter’s Warrior Cats book series

Right now, immediately to my right, my cat, Loki, is wrestling with a pile of laundry. She’s already thrown one of my Deftones shirts on the floor, and soon, she’ll likely mold my Sleep Token hoodie into a makeshift bed. She’s a menace, but I love her like there’s no tomorrow. I wonder what she’ll say (she’s very talkative) when I tell her that Erin Hunter’s acclaimed feline book series is getting an animated adaptation at Disney called Warrior Cats. She’ll probably stare at me, sniff the air, then return to her important cat business.

When and where will Warrior Cats debut?

At any rate, Disney plans to unleash Warrior Cats in 2028 on both Disney+ and The Disney Channel, with Rodrigo Blaas (Finding Nemo) in the director’s chair in collaboration with El Guiri Studios, Original Force, and China’s Tencent Video. The series revolves around the epic adventures, rivalries, and survival of multiple clans of feral, wild cats.

This is the first authorized animation of “Warrior Cats” and will follow the core storytelling of the first series of books, “Warrior Cats: The Prophecies Begin.”

Warrior Cats is legendary

The Warrior Cats books, written by a team under the pseudonym Erin Hunter, have sold more than 90 million copies and been translated into 38 languages. According to Deadline, Warrior Cats is massive on social media and video game platforms, with YouTube and TikTok content generating nearly 3 billion views. Meanwhile, a fan-made Roblox game based on the series has 735 million plays. C’mon, Fortnite, step up your game! Where’s your Warrior Cats user-made level? Too busy with that Italian Brainrot, eh?

Ayo Davis on bringing Warrior Cats to Disney

“We’re always seeking out fresh, imaginative storytelling that resonates with families around the world,” said Ayo Davis, president, Disney Kids & Family. Warrior Cats has inspired a generation of fans, and we couldn’t be more excited to partner with Coolabi Group to bring this phenomenal series to life on Disney+ and Disney Channel.”

Look, I love most animals, though cats are by far my favorite, so I’m into this. I’ve never read the Warrior Cats novels, but I’ve been aware of them for years. I love the cover art for the series, and the idea of following the drama and adventures of feral cats sounds like fun. Plus, being JoBlo’s animation guy, I’ll likely cover this series when it debuts. In fact, I might grab a volume or two to see what it’s all about. If it’s anything like Mouse Guard, but with cats, we’ll be in business.

Have you read any of the Warrior Cats novels? Are you a cat person in general? Let us know in the comments section below. And before you go, marvel at the beauty of my cat, Loki! There’s a photo of her posted below. Cheers!
