The Jungle Book is still king of the box office !
Disney's animal-filled wilderness adventure remained enticing for a second weekend, keeping THE JUNGLE BOOK on top with an estimated $60.8 million!
Director Jon Favreau's live-action update of the Rudyard Kipling tale dropped only 41% from an impressive opening last weekend, putting its domestic total near $200 million after ten days. With a worldwide total of $528 million so far, THE JUNGLE BOOK is looking like Disney's second smash of 2016.
Opening in second place was the new action-fantasy THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER'S WAR with $20 million. The PG-13 spinoff of 2012's SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN ditched Kristen Stewart and added Jessica Chastain and Emily Blunt to join Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron, but the follow-up could only bring in a fraction of the original's $56.2 million opening.
The first movie ended with nearly $400 million worldwide against a $175 million cost, while the leaner WINTER'S WAR had a $115 million reported budget. The sequel has already crossed $100 million worldwide, but critics closed the book on the fairy tale with a dreadful 17% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Ice Cube comedy BARBERSHOP: THE NEXT CUT moved down a slot to third with $10.8 million, trimmed 46% from its opening last weekend. The PG-13 sequel has a 10-day domestic total of $36 million (on a reported $20 million cost).
Disney's ZOOTOPIA actually jumped up a spot to fourth with $6.6 million and a domestic total of $316.4 million after two full months on the top half of the chart. The Mouse House's second talking-creature hit of the year has accumulated $907 million worldwide.
Melissa McCarthy's R-rated comedy THE BOSS was in fifth place with $6 million for a domestic total of nearly $50 million on its third weekend in theaters.
In sixth place was BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE with $5.5 million. Director Zack Snyder's costly costumed conflict has yet to double its heroic $166 million opening after five weekends but has fought its way to a global total of $851 million, which does make it the seventh highest-grossing comic book movie ever.
The Kevin Costner/Gary Oldman/Ryan Reynolds action-thriller CRIMINAL was in seventh place with $3.1 million, a drop of 46% from its weak opening last weekend. MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2 followed in eighth with another $2.1 million for the sequel.
The Spanish-language action-comedy COMPADRES opened on just 368 screens and landed in ninth place with $1.3 million, while the Aaron Paul/Helen Mirren/Alan Rickman drone thriller EYE IN THE SKY continued circling the bottom of the list and has slowly drifted to nearly $15 million after seven weekends in a relatively moderate number of theaters.
GOD'S NOT DEAD 2 and MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN retreated from the chart as the Tom Hanks drama A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING opened in 401 locations for $1.2 million to land just outside the Top 10. The Michael Shannon/Kevin Spacey drama ELVIS & NIXON was released on 381 screens for $456k.
Next weekend brings the R-rated Key & Peele kitten comedy KEANU, the animated videogame adaptation RATCHET & CLANK, and Garry Marshall's latest holiday-themed romantic comedy MOTHER'S DAY.
