Crazy Rich Asians keep getting crazy rich!
For a second weekend, the romantic comedy CRAZY RICH ASIANS was at the top of the box office with an estimated $25 million!
The adaptation of Kevin Kwan's bestselling book dipped by a mere 5.7% from last weekend's opening figure (after its Wednesday start). That puts it in the company of rare single-digit second weekend drops of releases such as THE FUGITIVE (-5.6%), THE SIXTH SENSE (-3.4%) and AVATAR (-1.8%)
Director Jon Chu's popular PG-13 romcom (which unsurprisingly has a sequel in the works already) has collected a 12-day domestic total of $76.8 million on a reported cost of $30 million.
Jumbo-jaws thriller THE MEG was again treading water in second place with $13 million. On its third weekend at sea, Jason Statham's PG-13 duel with a prehistoric shark swam to a domestic total of $105.3 million and has swallowed a worldwide total of $408 million (on a cost officially $130 million, though rumored as high as $175 million).
Opening in third place was the new R-rated comedy THE HAPPYTIME MURDERS with $10 million.
Melissa McCarthy's investigation into violent puppet crimes now marks her lowest opening in a lead role, beneath the $17 million start of her PG-13 campus comedy LIFE OF THE PARTY earlier this summer.
It cost a reported $40 million to bring the long-in-development noir story of felt felons (directed by Muppet veteran Brian Henson) to the big screen.

Hanging on to fourth place was MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT with $8 million, taking the sixth entry in the Tom Cruise spy franchise to $193.9 million domestic and $538.7 million worldwide (on a $178 million reported cost).
Disney's CHRISTOPHER ROBIN strolled up a spot to fifth place with $6.3 million on its fourth weekend in theaters. The PG-rated Ewan McGregor/Winnie the Pooh fantasy now has a domestic total of $77.6 million and a worldwide total of $112.7 (on a $75 million reported cost).
Mark Wahlberg's action movie MILE 22 was in sixth place with $6 million, losing 56% of business from its opening last weekend. The R-rated run-and-gun thriller (Wahlberg's fourth effort with director Peter Berg) has a ten-day domestic total of $25.1 million on a reported cost of $35 million.
The PG-13 historical thriller ALPHA was in seventh place with $5.6 million, a drop of 45% from last week's opening. The $51 million Ice Age boy-and-his-wolf adventure has a ten-day domestic total of $20.1 million.
In eighth place was the R-rated true tale BLACKKKLANSMAN with $5.3 million. Filmmaker Spike Lee's 70s-set story of a black detective and his white Jewish partner infiltrating the KKK has a domestic total of $32 million (on a reported cost of $15 million).
In ninth place was the new PG-rated adventure A.X.L. with an opening of $2.9 million.
The sci-fi family movie about a teen who finds the titular experimental robotic dog (abbreviated from Attack/Exploration/Logistics) cost a reported $10 million. The movie currently has a 22% average on Rotten Tomatoes from the handful of critics that reviewed it.
Horror movie SLENDER MAN closed out the list in tenth with $2.7 million, bringing the PG-13 creepypasta thriller to a domestic total of $25.4 million (on a $10 million reported cost).
Outside the chart, it was time to depart for animated sequel HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3: SUMMER VACATION and musical romcom MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN. In limited release, John Cho's online pursuit of his missing daughter in SEARCHING had a solid $40k per-screen average. The PG-13 thriller also received strong reviews with a 92% average on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).
Meanwhile, the Rami Malek/Charlie Hunnam update of prison escape movie PAPILLON was released on 544 screens and made $1.1 million for the weekend. And Marvel's ANT-MAN AND THE WASP may have disappeared from the domestic chart last week, but it just opened to $68 million in China for a worldwide total of $544 million, surging ahead of the original ANT-MAN's $519 million global finish.
Next weekend brings summer to an end with the sci-fi adventure KIN and the WWII thriller OPERATION FINALE (on Wednesday), while SEARCHING expands to 1000 screens.
