Weekend Box Office Report: December 5-7, 2014

Still hungry for Mockingjay!

Futuristic heroine Katniss Everdeen continued as reigning champion for a third weekend, keeping THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 1 on top of the box office with an estimated $21.6 million!

A slow box office weekend had all releases losing steam, although MOCKINGJAY PART 1 has already gathered $560 million worldwide. While Jennifer Lawrence's big franchise is clearly still successful, the penultimate chapter's $257 million domestic total does trail behind CATCHING FIRE's $335 million total at this point in its release.

Holding onto second was the computer-animated spinoff PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR with $11.1 million, down 56% from its opening last week. The R-rated comedy HORRIBLE BOSSES 2 moved up two spots to third with $8.6 million, a 44% drop from its first weekend.

The Bateman/Sudeikis/Day revenge sequel nudged Disney's family feature BIG HERO 6 down to fourth with $8.1 million, with Christopher Nolan's INTERSTELLAR close behind in fifth with $8 million. The deep space journey is up to nearly $600 million worldwide, whereas Disney's new team of high-tech protectors are still awaiting release in many major international territories over the next couple of months.

The Jim Carrey/Jeff Daniels doofus reunion DUMB AND DUMBER TO, the Stephen Hawking biopic THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING, and David Fincher's GONE GIRL all retained their positions from last weekend. The week's only new release opened in ninth place as the supernatural horror flick THE PYRAMID brought in just $1.3 million, putting it ahead of Michael Keaton's BIRDMAN.

Outside the chart, Bill Murray's ST. VINCENT slipped away after six weeks in the Top 10, while the Reese Witherspoon hiking drama WILD opened in limited release to a decent $30k per-screen average, and the Oscar-buzzed Benedict Cumberbatch film THE IMITATION GAME continued to attract attention with a $50k per-screen average on 8 screens.

Next weekend brings director Ridley Scott's biblical epic EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS and Chris Rock's comedy TOP FIVE, plus the limited release of Paul Thomas Anderson's Pynchon adaptation INHERENT VICE.
