The Revenant charges to the top!
Leonardo DiCaprio's brutal tale of survival and vengeance dragged itself to the #1 position this weekend as THE REVENANT made an estimated $16 million!
As half the country got walloped with its own harsh weather, Alejandro González Iñárritu's snow-covered film finally wandered to the top of the mountain after three weekends in wide release (it first opened on Christmas Day in four theaters). The R-rated Oscar nominee is at a domestic total of $119.1 million and a global total of $233.6 million (on a reported $135 million cost).
After slipping to third place last week, STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS jumped to second with $14.2 million, pushing it up to an astonishing $879 million domestic total and a $1.94 billion worldwide total.
In third place was last weekend's winner RIDE ALONG 2 with $12.9 million, down 63% from its opening. Its 10-day domestic total is $59.1 million, compared to the $75 million 10-day total of the original in January 2014.
Opening in fourth was the new R-rated comedy DIRTY GRANDPA with $11.5 million. The pairing of Robert De Niro and Zac Efron (directed by BORAT and BRUNO writer Dan Mazer) didn't seem to result in many laughs, judging from the 8% critical average on Rotten Tomatoes.
In fifth place was another new release, the supernatural thriller THE BOY with an opening of $11.2 million. The PG-13 fright flick, with "The Walking Dead" co-star Lauren Cohen playing nanny to a porcelain child, had a reported cost of $10 million and only scared up a 29% average from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
The last of the weekend's new releases debuted in sixth place with $10.7 million for the Chloe Moretz alien-invasion movie THE 5TH WAVE. Based on the young-adult novels by Rick Yancey, the post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller had a reported price tag of $38 million and received a 19% average on Rotten Tomatoes.
Michael Bay's 13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDERS OF BENGHAZI was in seventh with $9.7 million, a moderate 39% drop from its fourth place opening last weekend for a 10-day total of $33.4 million (on a $50 million budget).
In eighth place was the Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg comedy DADDY'S HOME (now at nearly $200 million worldwide), followed by computer-animated polar bear NORM OF THE NORTH (remaining punished with 0% on Rotten Tomatoes) and Best Picture nominee (and possible frontrunner) THE BIG SHORT.
Outside the chart, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's SISTERS departed after a month and a half in theaters, along with horror movie THE FOREST and Quentin Tarantino's THE HATEFUL EIGHT (which should end up crossing $100 million worldwide).
Next weekend brings the Dreamworks Animation sequel KUNG FU PANDA 3, the Chris Pine/Casey Affleck ocean thriller THE FINEST HOURS, the latest Wayans Brothers parody FIFTY SHADES OF BLACK, and the troubled Natalie Portman Western JANE GOT A GUN.
