Solo holds onto first!
Han and Chewie's big-budget flashback barely maintained control this weekend as SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY remained on top at the box office with an estimated $29.2 million.
The dive into the Corellian scoundrel's history took its own dive, swooping down 65% from its opening last weekend for a ten-day domestic total of $148.8 million (a sum still less than each of the opening weekends for Disney's previous three STAR WARS releases).
The early journey of the Millennium Falcon has also collected a worldwide total of $264 million, a flimsy figure considering the $2 billion global finish of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS and the $1.3 billion final tally of STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI (not to mention the $1.05 billion worldwide haul of ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY).
Director Ron Howard's sci-fi heist adventure (completed after original directing duo Christopher Miller and Phil Lord parted ways) was rumored to cost anywhere from $250 to $300 million.
R-rated comic sequel DEADPOOL 2 staked its spot in second place with $23.3 million, bringing Ryan Reynolds' loquacious killer to a domestic total of $254.6 million on its third weekend. The injury-absorbing mercenary and his new pals have gathered nearly $600 million worldwide so far (on a reported $110 million cost).
The new nautical thriller ADRIFT floated into third place with an opening of $11.5 million.
The Shailene Woodley/Sam Claflin romance-turned-tragedy (based on a true story) cost a reported $35 million. Critics didn't seem to mind getting stranded at sea with the couple, giving their dramatic turn of ocean events a 71% average on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).
On its sixth weekend in theaters, Marvel's AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR grabbed another $10.3 million for fourth place. The climactic costumed clash now has a domestic total of $642.8 million (overcoming the $623 million finish of THE AVENGERS in 2012) and rules the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a global total of $1.96 billion.
The PG-13 adult comedy BOOK CLUB continued to be a counterprogramming choice in fifth with $6.8 million for a domestic total of $47.3 million after three weekends (the Diane Keaton/Jane Fonda/Mary Steenburgen/Candice Bergen romcom cost a reported $10 million).
Opening in sixth place was the new R-rated thriller UPGRADE with $4.4 million.
The latest effort from low-budget horror company Blumhouse, with Logan Marshall-Green using tech enhancements to exact grisly vengeance, reportedly cost under $5 million.
Critics applauded the brutal sci-fi action (directed by Leigh Whannell of the SAW and INSIDIOUS series), giving it an 85% average on Rotten Tomatoes. You can eyeball the JoBlo review HERE.
The Melissa McCarthy comedy LIFE OF THE PARTY was in seventh with $3.4 million for a $46.3 million domestic total. Gabrielle Union's home-invasion thriller BREAKING IN followed in eighth with $2.8 million, bringing it to $41.3 million domestic (on a budget of $6 million).
Johnny Knoxville's latest bodily trauma comedy ACTION POINT opened in ninth place with $2.3 million.
Watching Knoxville sustain abuse clearly isn't as enticing to current audiences as the star's past JACKASS days — BAD GRAMPA opened with $32 million in 2013, and JACKASS 3-D started with a bone-crunching $50 million in 2010.
The new R-rated period comedy (based on an actual notoriously dangerous theme park) cost a reported $19 million. Critics definitely weren't crazy about witnessing Knoxville's new excruciating antics, giving the movie a 16% average on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).
The Anna Faris/Eugenio Derbez comedy remake OVERBOARD closed out the list with $1.9 million, taking it to a $45.5 million domestic total on its fifth weekend.
Outside the chart, horror-thriller A QUIET PLACE sand-walked out of sight with comedy SHOW DOGS and Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic RBG. In limited release, the fact-based crime-thriller AMERICAN ANIMALS had a solid $35k per-screen average.
Next weekend has Sandra Bullock and friends pulling a con in OCEAN'S 8, a family faces terror in HEREDITARY, and criminals seek refuge at HOTEL ARTEMIS.
