Guardians keep going and going!
Marvel's unlikely space champions once again refused to relinquish the top of the chart as GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY won the weekend with an estimated $10.1 million!
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY has now enjoyed four weekends at #1 (although not in a row — they did take a couple weekends off to let TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES play). In the past ten years, only three other movies have accomplished that feat: THE DARK KNIGHT, AVATAR and THE HUNGER GAMES.
In addition, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY's worldwide total of $586.2 million has now just scraped by IRON MAN's $585.2 million global finish back in 2008.
There's not a whole lot of other interesting box office activity on this slow weekend — it's one of the lowest-grossing in a decade. TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES kept a grip on second place with $6.5 million as it comes thisclose to passing HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2's $174.7 million domestic total.
The Chloe Moretz teen drama IF I STAY did indeed stay in third with another $5.7 million, while LET'S BE COPS and THE NOVEMBER MAN each got boosted up a spot from last week's standings as the catacombs horror release AS ABOVE/SO BELOW descended down to sixth.
WHEN THE GAME STANDS TALL, THE GIVER and THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY all remained in the exact same positions as last week, and Scarlett Johansson's sci-fi/action movie LUCY strutted back into the Top 10 as it has also reached an impressive $313.4 million worldwide total.
If you thought there weren't any major releases this past weekend, that's not entirely true — a faith-based musical drama called THE IDENTICAL (a "What If?" story about Elvis Presley's twin brother) was released on nearly 2000 screens and made a cruel $1.9 million. Critics pummeled the movie with a 4% average on Rotten Tomatoes, while the few dozen moviegoers who turned up gave it a 'B' CinemaScore.
Outside the chart, THE EXPENDABLES 3 got loaded into the van headed for the retirement home, the limited IMAX 20th anniversary re-release of FORREST GUMP only made $405k, Richard Linklater's BOYHOOD has passed $20 million, and Tom Cruise's sci-fi time-looper EDGE OF TOMORROW has finally crawled over $100 million domestic after battling for three months in theaters.
