Wells Cathedral reps defend decision for Hellboy to film inside their church

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Recently, representatives of the Cathedral Church of Saint Andrew, commonly known to many as Wells Cathedral, have had to defend their decision to allow the latest HELLBOY movie to be filmed inside of their place of worship. It's common knowledge that the superhero comic book world of HELLBOY features a variety of unspeakable evils as a part of its cast. With that said, it should come as no surprise that some would take umbrage with the likes of demons, Nazis and occultists occupying the sacred grounds.

However, those in charge of the Wells Cathedral have come forward in an attempt to soothe their patrons by saying that, while the decision might cause a bit of concern, the Hellboy character's true nature is that he is a defender against the forces of darkness. The church also stressed that, upon further investigation, one can see that Hellboy fights for the light in an eternal battle of good versus evil.

Predictably, select members of the church remained firm on their disapproval. Like churchgoer Pamela Eagan, who says that she's horrified by the thought of the production setting up shop in such a enlightened place. "For heaven's sake. Are we losing sight of what this was built for? I have to say I am surprised and shocked."

While I have no business commenting on a person's religious beliefs, I will say that I commend the fine people of the Wells Cathedral for looking beyond the title and visage of Hellboy, and welcoming him into their church. By doing a bit of research, they've seen beyond the veil of first-impressions, and now HELLBOY has a really sweet location in which to film.

Neil Marshall's HELLBOY starring David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane and Daniel Dae Kim is expected for a 2018 release.
