Update: We’re streaming Gears 5 live on Twitch tonight!

Update: Last Wednesday, we were locked, loaded, and ready to present GEARS 5 live on our JoBlo Games Twitch channel. However, the servers over at Xbox Live had other plans. Following the public launch of the game, Microsoft's online sevice shit the bed, keeping us from streaming the game for all of you fine folks. Thankfully, it appears as if the servers have been brought up to snuff since that time, and we'll be giving the game another go later this evening. Feel free to join us as we riddle Locusts with bullets, chuck explosives with the greatest of ease, and lay waste to some of the ugliest alien soldiers in the known galaxy.

Who's ready to rev up their chainsaw gun once again and carve through endless hordes of Locusts, Brumaks, Riftworms, and just about anything that could use a good bullet to their mutated skull? Later this evening, our own Bobby Shortle will be marching into the fray of GEARS 5, the latest chapter of the third-person shooter video game franchise developed by The Coalition and published by Xbox Game Studios.

The story for GEARS 5 takes place not long after the events of Gears of War 4, in which JD Fenix – son of series poster boy Marcus Fenix – and his compatriots Del and Kait discovered a threat known as the Swarm and worked alongside one another to eradicate it. In GEARS 5, you play as Kait, a soldier who sadly lost her mother to the Swarm before the close of Gears of War 4. With vengeance in her heart and fire in her veins, players explore Kait's connection to the Swarm while uncovering new and disturbing secrets that COG officials have kept hidden from the very people who serve beneath their banner.

While GEARS 5 still features plenty of chest-high walls and pop-and-shoot gameplay, I've heard that there are a number of features that help to set this chapter apart from its predecessors. One such mode is called Escape, in which players must outrun a bomb, outsmart the Swarm, and escape the Hive! It's a new, aggressive, and high-stakes co-op mode featuring a three-player suicide squad that must work together to take out enemy hives from within.

GEARS 5 also allows players to create their own maps in the game's Map Builder mode. If you've not feeling creative, there's also my personal favorite, Horde Mode, in which four friends endure waves of ever-stronger enemies and bosses! To be successful in this part of the game, players will have to use new hero abilities, build defenses, collect power-ups, and level up their skills by working as a team. Get those headsets ready, soldiers! It's bound to be a bloody good time, so be sure to join us!
