2015's JURASSIC WORLD was a monster of a moneymaker for Universal and re-introduced the world of JURASSIC PARK to older viewers, while welcoming in a new generation to the dinos-on-the-rampage franchise. Reviews for the film were mixed and many felt the magic of Spielberg's 1993 classic was lost in this new iteration, but it still brought the dinosaur fun and carnage, which makes it easy to overlook poorly developed characters and weak storytelling. Ultimately, the box office more than justified a sequel (and a third is already greenlit and dated), this time directed by J.A. Bayona (A MONSTER CALLS) with a script by JURASSIC WORLD director/screenwriter Colin Trevorrow, JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM continues the story from the first film, dealing with the fallout of the closed-down park and dinosaurs left to their own devices in the face of an island about to be covered in volcanic ash. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard return to the fray, along with Rafe Spall, James Cromwell, Toby Jones, Ted Levine, Jeff Goldblum and BD Wong.
So far, reviews for FALLEN KINGDOM are, sadly, mixed, with many finding the storytelling to be just as weak as the first film, along with a series of new characters that fall prey not only to dinosaurs, but weak character development. Our own Chris Bumbray enjoyed the film in his 7/10 for the most part, but certainly didn't love it and had quite a few issues overall, saying, "Still, as silly as it is, the movie is fun and jam-packed with action. Bayona even tries to tug at the heartstrings a little by revisiting Pratt’s relationship with his pet Dino Blue. It all leads up to a crazy, bonkers-nuts ending, which some may think is idiotic, while others may salivate at the potential for even crazier sequels. I’m somewhere in the middle."
