OUR PICKS FOR December 3rd – 9th

Wanna watch something….with all the Arrowverse heroes plus Batwoman?

ELSEWORLDS Three Night Event (Premieres December 9th-11th on The CW) – The annual crossover event on The CW has grown into quite the spectacle in recent years. Last year gave us Crisis on Earth X but this year we finally get to see Batwoman in live action for the first time. While DC Comics may not have mastered their big screen universe, they are dominating the small screen with fun series that play with the history of their characters but still deliver faithful adaptations of classic material.

Wanna watch something….educational from the star of TRANSFORMERS?

LEGENDS OF THE LOST WITH MEGAN FOX (Premieres December 4th on Travel) – This show came out of nowhere. I always knew Megan Fox was interested in occult and strange histories, but I didn't realize it was enough for her to film her own series about it. This could be an absolute trainwreck of a series or it could be pretty interesting. Either way, a star the caliber of Megan Fox has me intrigued enough to check this one out.

Wanna watch something….critically acclaimed and very funny?

THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL (Premieres December 5th on Amazon Prime) – Winning a bunch of awards including trophies for lead actress Rachel Brosnahan, the second season of this comedy-drama has some pretty big shoes to fill. The period setting may make you think this is in some way too haughty for the average viewer, but I encourage you to check it out for yourselves. You may even laugh a little.

Wanna watch something….with indie cred?

DUMPLIN' (Premieres December 7th on Netflix) – Based on the novel of the same name, the trailer for this movie makes it look like virtually every independent comedy about someone trying to make themselves out of nothing. It could be very forgettable or it could end up being an inspirational little flick. The best part is that it airs on Netflix so you don't have to pay anything additional to check it out.

Wanna watch something….that should have been on the big screen?

MOWGLI: LEGEND OF THE JUNGLE (Premieres December 7th on Netflix) – Andy Serkis' motion capture spectacle got screwed by coming out after Jon Favreau's blockbuster THE JUNGLE BOOK. Languishing from delay after delay, Warner Bros finally dumped it on Netflix. While it will get a limited big screen run, the odds are that this movie is nowhere near as good as it should be. Still, I am very curious to see how it compares to Favreau's vision as well as how well Serkis handles directing a film of this scale.

Wanna watch something….that finally gives JK Simmons his due?

COUNTERPART (Premieres December 9th on Starz) – The first season of Counterpart garnered good buzz and was especially deserving as a headline role for the great JK Simmons. While Simmons did win an Oscar for WHIPLASH, he never got the chance to be the lead in his own show. Counterpart changed that and the second season looks to up the tension, drama, and action. I just hope that we get to see a third Simmons appear this year!

Wanna watch something….about Canadian organized crime?

BAD BLOOD (Premieres December 7th on Netflix) – Canada has organized crime? I guess every country has to have bad guys. This limited series aired already in the Great White North and now makes it's Stateside debut on Netflix. Starring Anthony LaPaglia, this looks like pretty much every other crime show on TV. I just want to check it out to see if the criminals apologize after they shoot each person.

Wanna watch something….with really shitty cooks?

NAILED IT! HOLIDAY SPECIAL (Premieres December 7th on Netflix) – A guilty pleasure in my home is watching shows where average people fail miserably at cooking. Netflix has already aired two brief seasons of Nailed It! which is better than all the other shows like it on cable because the judges are actually funny and mock the contestants incessantly. This holiday special will have to do until a full season premieres, but if you need some laughs that don't require a lot of investment, check this one out.
