While there’s no shortage of great TV shows to watch, beloved filmmaker and horror aficionado Guillermo del Toro wants to make sure one series in particular is on everyone’s radar. Over the weekend, the director of Pan’s Labyrinth and Crimson Peak took to social media to sing the praises of Apple TV‘s Widow’s Bay, a comedic horror series created by Kate Dippold, saying it’s one of the best in recent memory.
Del Toro praises Widow’s Bay
“If I may- in my estimation- #WidowsBay may very well be the best streaming series in a long time… and hands down one of the most mesmerizing acts of narrative prestidigitation in Horror,” del Toro wrote.
In Widow’s Bay, a skeptical mayor leads the superstitious residents of a cursed New England island. The show stars Matthew Rhys, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kate O’Flynn, Stephen Root, Kevin Carroll, Dale Dickey, and more. Hiro Murai serves as director and executive producer on the series. The ten-part series premiered on April 29, 2026, to critical acclaim, with many critics praising the show’s performances, uniqueness, and intriguing lore.
What’s next for del Toro?
After directing last year’s Frankenstein, Guillermo del Toro is developing a new crime thriller, Fury, starring Oscar Isaac, in which two men, burdened by their past regrets, travel together, reminiscing, talking, and committing a brutal series of murders. Meanwhile, del Toro is in pre-production for The Buried Giant, an adult stop-motion animated fairy tale about the journey of Axl and Beatrice, a couple who set out to find their son, whom they have not seen for some time and do not remember very well. So far, the only actor attached to The Buried Giant is Ron Perlman, whom del Toro directed in 2004’s Hellboy and its 2008 sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
Have you seen Widow’s Bay? I don’t know that I’ve used my Apple TV since the second season of Severance ended. There’s a lot of stuff on there I’m excited to check out, but time is a factor.
