Will Forte promises MacGruber 2 will happen “for sure”

Looks like we may be getting further big screen adventures featuring Will Forte as MACGRUBER, even if they have to be made out of household materials. MACGRUBER!

During press for his dramatic turn in the indie RUN & JUMP, Will Forte was asked about the potential for a sequel featuring his mulleted MACGYVER spoof. He told Entertainment Weekly this:

“We are going to make MACGRUBER 2 for sure,” he says. “Whether we have to do it with a video camera in our backyards – there will be some form of MACGRUBER 2.”

Forte kicked around the potential for a Kickstarter campaign to film the movie which he claims director Jorma Taccone had thought about a couple of years ago. In the wake of VERONICA MARS getting the greenlight because of the crowdsourcing campaign, could MACGRUBER generate a sequel the same way? Are there enough fans of the character to earn enough? The original MACGRUBER grossed $9.3 million worldwide on a budget of $10 million. I would have to say this may end up as some sort of Funny or Die series or potential direct to DVD project.

The SNL character and 2010 film featuring Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillipe, and Val Kilmer, is hilarious in short sketch format, but when expanded to a feature length movie, it suffered the same fate as movies like THE LADIES MAN, NIGHT AT THE ROXBURY, SUPERSTAR, and many more. I am a Will Forte fan but I found the original MACGRUBER an abysmal exercise in “comedy”. It was painfully bad, but if it is on cable and watched in small bursts of a few minutes here or there, it isn’t as awful.

Any MACGRUBER fans out there excited for this news?
