Interviews: Hero Fiennes Tiffin and the cast of Young Sherlock talk about the Guy Ritchie-directed series

Guy Ritchie and Sherlock Holmes have a history together. The British filmmaker has helmed two different films based on the character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but none quite like Young Sherlock. Based on the series of young adult novels by Andrew Lane, Young Sherlock takes a very different angle on the early days of Holmes before he became the legendary private investigator fans have loved for over a hundred years.

Young Sherlock is an irreverent, action-packed mystery that charts the legendary origin story of the world’s greatest detective. When a charismatic, youthfully defiant Sherlock Holmes meets none other than James Moriarty, he finds himself dragged into a murder investigation that threatens his liberty. Sherlock’s first ever case unravels a globe-trotting conspiracy, leading to an explosive showdown that alters the course of his life forever. Unfolding in a vibrant Victorian England and adventuring abroad, the series will expose the early antics of the anarchic adolescent who is yet to evolve into Baker Street’s most renowned resident.

I spoke with the cast and creator of Young Sherlock about their new series. Zine Tseng, seen recently in the Netflix hit series 3 Body Problem, discussed her chemistry with Hero Fiennes Tiffin and what she found most challenging about portraying Princess Gulun Shou’an. Max Irons discussed which versions of Mycroft inspired his performance as Sherlock’s buttoned-up older brother. Showrunner Matthew Parkhill discussed the source material for Young Sherlock and how he designed the series’ path. Donal Finn talked about playing James Moriarty before he becomes Sherlock’s nemesis, while Hero Fiennes Tiffin explained his take on the character to set him apart from the iconic versions we have seen before. Young Sherlock premieres on Prime Video on March 4th.
