Zack Snyder zombie movie Army of the Dead will have ‘insane zombie mayhem’

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Fear the Walking Dead cast member Garret Dillahunt will also be facing zombies in director Zack Snyder's ARMY OF THE DEAD, which will be released on the Netflix streaming service sometime next year, and last week we shared an interview in which Dillahunt said the zombies in ARMY OF THE DEAD are going to be "really fast and scary". Now Snyder has done some ARMY hyping himself on the Film Junkee Vodka Stream. During a conversation that lasted nearly 90 minutes, Snyder promised that 90% of the zombies in the film were brought to the screen with practical effects, and it sounds like they're going to be involved in some cool scenes:

The sort of zombie war, the action sequences and the fighting, my longtime collaborator and friend Damon Caro worked hard to create some insane zombie mayhem on an epic level, with a little splash of Vegas, just to make it cool."

When asked what the tone of the film is, Snyder replied,

I’m obsessed with the kind of tone where – I would say this – the movie has fun, but it doesn’t make fun, which is a really fine line. I really wanted to make a no-holds-barred zombie genre insanity."

I can definitely get on board for no-holds-barred zombie mayhem and insanity. Snyder added that

we nerded out hardcore on our genre tropes, and you will see the tropiest tropification of tropes in the history of troping."

I don't know what that means, but I'm interested in finding out. The full interview with Snyder can be seen in the embed below. Thanks go out to Slashfilm for the transcriptions.

Written by Snyder, Joby Harold, and Shay Hatten, ARMY OF THE DEAD is an adventure film that takes place after

a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, where a man assembles a group of mercenaries to take the ultimate gamble: venturing into the quarantined zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.

Dillahunt is joined in the cast by Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana De La Reguera, Huma Qureshi, Raúl Castillo, Omari Hardwick, Tig Notaro, Hiroyuki Sanada, Nora Arnezeder, Matthias Schweighöfer, Rich Cetrone, and Samantha Win.

Zack Snyder produced ARMY OF THE DEAD with Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller. This is a franchise starter that will be followed by a prequel that centers on Schweighöfer's character and an anime series that will serve as an "origin story" for Bautista's character.
