You’ve heard of SHAUN OF THE DEAD, now get ready for…. JUAN OF THE DEAD! That’s right folks, if you thought the zombie-comedy genre was dead in the water, then you must be stupid. Because it’s not. And thanks to ZOMBIELAND, it’s not going away any time soon.
So is this a joke? No. JUAN OF THE DEAD is the real deal. According to Variety, production companies 5ta Avenida Producciones and La Zanfona Produccione are giving Alejandro Brugues the greenlight to direct the flick, which goes a little something like this: a 40-year-old slacker named Juan notices that people are beginning to turn violent. As a zombie epidemic spreads through Havana, he decides to make a quick buck, offering to slay people’s infected relatives. But as the zombie plague reaches national proportions Juan has to concentrate on his survival.
For a second there, it just sounded like SHAUN–but in Havana. And I guess it still does, except for the ‘kill your zombie family’ business he comes up with. That’s a great idea for a business. I bet Shaun is kicking himself for not thinking of that one first.
Juan is set to be played by Alexis Diaz de Villegas in the film, which is set to start filming this September with a budget of $2.7M. Sure, that might seem like chump change around Hollywood, but for a Cuban production, that’s kind of a big deal, so it should be interesting to see how that all pans out.
