A reboot of The Butterfly Effect is in the works

Jul. 26, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

The Butterfly Effect

2004's THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT didn't exactly receive glowing reviews from critics, but movie goers enjoyed the film and it became a decent size hit, grossing almost $100 million in theaters. The time travel film starring Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart also did very well in DVD sales, and it spawned two direct-to-DVD sequels. Now this is happening:

Variety is reporting that THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT will get a reboot. Eric Bress (one of the writers/directors from the original) will write the screenplay, but no word on if he'll be directing it as well. Several producers from the original will also be back for the planned reboot. There's no news on when filming is expected to start, a release date or casting at this time.

I'm not a big fan of the original like many on this site, but the idea alone offends me. Really? A reboot of THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT? I'm not even going to get into if it's too soon or not for a reboot: this is just dumb and lazy. Both of the sequels received criticism for pretty much being the same as the first and the films were ignored by the public, so what makes Bress and the producers think another f*cking time travel movie with THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT name attached to it is a good idea? Are they after our cash? Dumb question; of course they are! Although I would gladly pay money if they didn't make a reboot. Is there a Kickstarter for that?

As I said, I didn't love the original but I know many do so I can only imagine how some of you feel about this news. Feel free to share your frustration, anger and creative curse words in the Strike Back.

Extra Tidbit: Besides THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT Eric Bress is probably best known for his work on the FINAL DESTINATION series.

WTF ...seriously WTF....its way too soon for a reboot...this movie doesnt not need a reboot, I am not saying I am a fan of the movie, I mean it was a decent flick...but come on...its stupid...you cant think of something better to remake....there are thousands of other movies out there...at the very least...make another sequel

Doesn't have to be a reboot

I liked the first especially the directors cut ending. But it doesn't have to be a reboot just a good film about someone with the same gift, having said that in the first he found out his dad had the gift maybe they could use that.

ehh whatever....more offended by the Oldboy remake

I somewhat liked the movie. What upset me the most was how the trailers showed a different kind of movie. I didn't realize it was going to be so 'fucked up' but it wasn't even a good 'fucked up' but just a crappy one. Ashton didn't do that bad of a job, to be honest, but he obviously will not be in the reboot. It was just a poorly executed film that could have been a lot better.

Wow, where to begin. I'll admit i (with strong emphasis) sort of liked the first movie but my main complaint was the half-assed lazy explanation for how the time-travel mechanics worked.
if this reboot is going to shed some light on it, then well and good otherwise f*ck it.

Loved the original

9 years to reboot? Ridiculous. Sad. How can people working in Hollywood look in the mirror every morning without vomiting over what an embarrassment they are to the movie industry? 7 billion people on Earth and nobody can come up with enough original ideas to avoid a 9 year reboot cycle?

The Butterfly Effect was a shit movie with a good concept, so I'm okay with this reboot. It can't be any worse than the original, but it can possibly be better.

I have to say, I liked the first movie, but there's no need for a sequel. Unless he used his time traveling ability to bang college chicks.

I really enjoyed the movie. Seen the second one and it's okay though essentially a repeat of part 1 with a different character. Is rebooting it a good idea? Well what does it matter...Superman Returns, F4, Hulk and now possibly Batman all received quick reboots and I didn't / haven't objected to those. Anyone know what the quickest movie to get a reboot is? When is Twilight being rebooted? brrrrrrrr

I like the movie but I think a reboot is a bad idea. I would be more interested in a movie that explores his father and his ability to do the time travel and how it ties into the first film. The two sequels were garbage.

Wow, if a lot of these writers weren't lazy enough with writing sequels and reboots and remakes, now they are doing it for BAD movies

Did you hear that? That was the sound of every writer with an original idea collectively killing themselves.

The only way I could see this needing a reboot is if they intend to take it in a whole new direction. As opposed to going back in time to save one girl, work some angle where he's going back in time to save people from a big threat. Make it more of a suspense/thriller. I'm thinking make it be about his father ended up being a terrorist and planned this huge attack over numerous years. The attack goes off and hundreds/thousands of people are killed. He and his mother are now watched under a very strict eye by the government and it's turned out for a shitty life for the two of them. Soon he discovers this ability to send his consciousness back in time, so he goes back to various points throughout his childhood/past to try and thwart his father's plans for the attack.

There IS one reboot, so to speak. It's "Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox". Probably the best DC animated feature since "Batman: Under the Red Hood".

It's an interesting concept but certainly not compelling enough to warrant a reboot, let alone so soon.
