Batman: Gotham By Gaslight release date and details unveiled

Today, Warner Bros. Animation announced some official details and the release date for their upcoming feature-length superhero adventure BATMAN: GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT. The film marks the first time that DC will present one of their original Elseworlds stories to Bat-fans by way of an animated film. You do know what that means, don't you? Things are about to get weird in Gotham City.

BATMAN: GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT is directed by Sam Liu and stars the voice acting talent of Bruce Greenwood as Batman; Jennifer Carpenter as Selina Kyle; Grey DeListe as Jason Todd; John DiMaggio as Harvey Bullock; and Anthony Head as Alfred Pennyworth.

The film takes place at the turn of the century as America’s continued industrial revolution is to be showcased at a World’s Fair hosted by Gotham City. But while the world prepares to witness the glittery glory of Gotham’s technological advances, there is a killer loose in the city’s darkest shadows. Preying on the city’s women, this killer is as precise as he is cruel.

As Police Commissioner James Gordon tries to calm the fears of Gotham’s citizens regarding the butcher called Jack the Ripper, the masked vigilante Batman enacts his own detective work – with the help of confident, capable Selina Kyle – to stop the Ripper’s murderous spree. Witness a world in flames as the notorious serial killer’s controlled savagery meets the calculated stealth of the Dark Knight.

In talking about the excitement of bringing this unique story to the animated screen, Mary Ellen Thomas, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Vice President, Family & Animation Marketing said, “We’re thrilled to bring this classic Elseworlds story to life. Gotham By Gaslight is the original Elseworlds tale from DC, and we know the fans have been anticipating this gritty adaptation. Fans will be transported to an alternate reality with this unexpected tale of the Dark Knight.”

BATMAN: GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT was inspired by the DC Comics story Gotham By Gaslight written by Brian Augustyn with art by Hellboy's Mike Mignola. James Krieg penned the screenplay, which I'm sure fans are hoping feels very much like the original, haunting tale. Although the title will be available in several formats, you'll soon have the option to view it in gorgeous a gorgeous Ultra HD Blu-Ray format, which marks only the second time that Warner Bros. has released a DC Universe Movie of this quality.

For those of us who are looking forward to a more modest option, a Blu-Ray Combo Pack, DVD, and Digital option will also be made available. The Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack features an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc in 4K with HDR and a Blu-ray disc featuring the film; the Blu-ray Combo Pack features the film in hi-definition; and the DVD features the movie in standard definition. The Ultra HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray Combo Pack include a digital version of the film.

BATMAN: GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT will arrive on Digital beggining on January 23, 2018, and on Ultra HD Blu-Ray Combo Pack, Blu-Ray Combo Pack and DVD come February 6, 2018. Hey, at least now you know what to ask for for Valentine's Day, right?
