Exclusive (Spoilers): Potential villain reveal for Guardians of the Galaxy and a tidbit on The Amazing Spider-Man 2!

May. 21, 2013by: Paul Shirey

SPOILER WARNING: The below scoop, while still a "rumor," contains potential spoilers for both GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2. By reading the below information you have given up your right to bitch and moan about spoilers. The gavel has been rapped.

To go along with our TRANSFORMERS 4 exclusive, we've also got some "marvelous" confirmations about two other franchises, namely those of the upcoming GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2. We've had little more than some concept art and casting news for GUARDIANS, which is just about to go in front of the lens, and there's been a lot of speculation about the villains in the film. Thanos has long been speculated to be the frontrunner, but with a main "henchman" that does the heavy lifting, such as Phalanx, The Controller, or The Collector.

According to our source the main villain will in fact be Ronan the Accuser, the ruler of the alien race known as the Kree. Ronan has fought the likes of the Fantastic Four, The Inhumans, and Guardians of the Galaxy in the comics and is a mainstay of the Marvel cosmic universe, so it's well in line for him to be featured as the main villain, especially with Marvel looking to expand it's cinematic adventures to the far reaches of space. Could this be a lead-up to the Kree-Skrull war in THE AVENGERS 2? It's anyone's guess, but Ronan is certainly a formidable threat and a solid lead villain for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY.

Actor Lee Pace was recently cast as a "villain" in the film, but it's hard to say if it's for Ronan the Accuser. There's nothing to say that he couldn't be playing the other rumored villains, but if he's playing the lead, then he's playing Ronan if our source is correct.

Our last little confirmation tidbit should put some fan's expectations to rest on THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, which features two villains as well: Electro and The Rhino (with hints at others, of course). Paul Giamatti plays Aleksei Sytsevich/The Rhino, and thus far we've only seen him in his "thug attire," leaving fans questioning whether we'll see the traditional "horny" costume or not. Rest easy, folks, as our source confirmed that Giamatti will "transform" into The Rhino throughout the course of the film. How the costume will look is still up in the air, but there will be some variation of a metamorphasised Sytsevich at some point during the film (again, I lead you to the Oscorp cannister he's stealing in the recent set pics. I'd bet good money that plays a role in his transformation).

Some interesting info, for sure. There's no official confirmation on this information, so take it with a grain of salt, but if true you can breathe a sigh of relief for The Rhino and start researching Ronan the Accuser.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, directed by James Gunn and starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Beautista, Michael Rooker, Lee Pace, and Ophelia Lovibond gets galactic on August 1, 2014.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, directed by Marc Webb and starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Shailene Woodley, Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Dane DeHaan, Chris Cooper, Colm Feore, B.J. Novak, Felicity Jones, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field, swings into theaters on May 2, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: What do you think? Is Ronan the Accuser a good enough villain to face off against the GOTG? Do you feel better knowing the Rhino will rock his horns at some point in TASM 2? Hit us back with your thoughts!

With all the properties they are getting back, I wish Marvel would use some characters that I recognize and not ones that send me to Google. Hard to get really pumped for something when I now nothing about the characters used

Ronan the Accuser is an AMAZING character and one of my favorites! I didn't even think this was possible because I thought that 20th Century FOX owned the rights to the Kree. I hope this rumor is true, it would totally help them set up the Inhumans. Then again this is post Iron Man 3 Marvel so I can only hope it's really Ronan the Accuser and some actor pretending to be Ronan the Accuser, damn, I just talked myself out of being excited for this.

Something about the Guardians movie just has not caught my attention yet. To me it just seems so out of place with what Marvel is doing for these phases. Maybe it's mostly because I am not too familiar with the comic book.

When it comes to the new Spider-Man, I just rewatched the first one again & I just hope they up the action sequences since in a nearly 2 hour plus movie there was about 30 minutes of Spidey in action. Now that the pointless origin story is out of the way it's time to see

Personally not really a spoiler for me. Anywayz, as for the Kree reference, I recently posted that it would be great if the Shield series starts of a Chitauri/Kree war story (can't be the Skrulls coz Fox have rights to that I think) that finishes up in Avengers 2 or 3. May be GOTG will start this off instead.

Who cares? I mean, it's a villain very few have heard of to go up against heroes that most people have never heard of, and those that have heard of them are probably not overly familiar with. This is the one Marvel movie that seems so "bleh". Like the casting just seems so random and it just seems like such a one-off movie that I don't see why people are getting excited for it. Most people are not that familiar with GOTG, if it were as popular as people in these talk backs make it out to be

Ronan is a great choice. the most important thing about that character is he leads into the Kree, which will have to tie into the Skrulls. And the Skrulls make for a helluva good time!

Does anyone really think Guardians of the Galaxy had the slightest chance of being anything more than mediocre? I mean James Gunn is okay but he hasnt done anything outstanding and none of the cast is great at all and you know its a bad sign when he casts Dave Baustista in his summer blockbuster. I just have no faith. ASM2 should be kick ass though

i was worried about the casting of Batista until Gunn said something on twitter about how he had a great screen test with Chris Pratt. seeing as how Pratt plays Andy on Parks and Rec (and various interviews), i can imagine him getting along very well with a wrestler on a goofy, fun personal level. i think that might be more important than Batista's actual acting abilities as they are taking the natural dynamic of the actors rather than forcing them to act.

Yeah, I totally agree with your overall sentiment. The Marvel cinematic universe has been hit and miss for me. Overall, its definitely been more hits than misses, but there have been some definite disappointments, both in terms of fan expectation, but more importantly in terms of objective quality. Gunn is still a relatively new director, and has never handled anything in this vein, so I want to give him the benefit of the doubt, just like I want to give every movie the benefit of the doubt.

Slither was alright, but not really exceptional, and is a totally different beast then what he's taking on here and I thought that Super had some cool stuff going on but as a whole was quite mediocre.

I read a good deal of the 90's GotG comics, and have read the first few issues of the new series. I want to look forward to this, and at this point I am, but I definitely am tempering my expectations.

Don't mind them using Ronan

But I was hoping for a little more Thanos to be honest but I guess he could still be around somewhere. The Rhino news I already assumed, but still good news.

Ronan the Accuser is certainly within the realm of Marvel in space i.e. Fantastic Four and Thanos.
