Jason Sudeikis in talks to be the new Fletch for Warner Bros.

03.11.2014

THR has learned Jason Sudeikis is very close to becoming the new Fletch for Warner Bros. in FLETCH WON. The project has been in development for a long time with multiple directors and actors either attached or rumored to be interested (with the most famous probably being Kevin Smith), and it looks like Warner Bros. may have finally found their Fletch.

The studio also has their fingers crossed the film will be the start of a new comedy franchise. FLETCH WON will be an origins story, and will apparently be more like the Gregory McDonald novels ("gritty action comedy with heart") than the original movies starring Chevy Chase as investigative reporter Irwin Fletcher. David List (a representative for the McDonalds estate) is producing FLETCH WON with Anonymous Content's Steve Golin and Michael Sugar.

I love Jason Sudeikis, and I think he'll make a great Fletch, if he joins the film. But since we've been hearing about a new FLETCH movie for almost two decades, I won't be convinced this is actually happening until filming starts. Warner Bros. and the producers still need to find a director, and if they have some issues finding one, it could be another very long wait before we hear anything else about this project. However, if Jason Sudeikis officially signs on, I think things will move a little faster for FLETCH WON.

What are your thoughts on Jason Sudeikis as Fletch, and who do you think should direct FLETCH WON?

Good casting

I think Sudeikis is funny. He can have a good dry sense of humor and I think he can really pull this off. I'm a fan, not a major fan but a fan. He's obviously doing something right he landed Olivia Wilde.

Haven't really seen much of anything he's been in so I can't judge. I'm just glad we finally hear something after Sooo long. I think Ed Helms or Ryan Reynolds would be good too. They should give Chevy Chase a cameo as Fletch senior, and bring back Geena Davis.

As much as I'm not a fan of Sudeikis...

...he's definitely got the 'douche' vibe that Chase built his persona upon. I think five years ago Ryan Reynolds would have been the obvious choice here but he probably had one too many box office bombs for a studio to put a rebooted franchise on his shoulders. I'd still like Chase to come back and do a cameo or a narration or something.

I would have love to seen the Smith/Lee version but like the article states, development hell. I like Sudeikis enough, though all I can think about is Applebees.

Oh, he'll be so relieved...

Strangely, I love this.
Anyone but Affleck, dear God.
Inspired bit of casting if this comes to be...

Nobody can reproduce Fletch...

Chevy Chase in the 80's was the most amazingly sarcastic actor out there. He could pull off being the most likable jackass in the world. His charm came heavily from his ability to be sarcastic. Watch Seems Like Old Times and Fletch. Both movies have the perfect amount of sarcastic comedy.

I don't think anyone has the ability to reproduce the witty charm Chevy brought to his roles. I kind of hope Jason plays it more like himself instead of trying to be Chevy.

Cool

I like the two Fletch movies (yes, I like Fletch Lives) and, when I saw Sudeikis' name, I thought "that's good!" I did read the first Fletch novel when Kevin Smith was trying to get the film made with Jason Lee as Fletch. It's a good read but very different than the Chevy Chase film. It's a darker story with Fletch having pretty questionable morals (specifically his live in girlfriend). In any case, I think Sudeikis can pull off the darker tones after seeing him in We're The Millers and, if

I can see Sudeikis as Fletch. I know nothing about the character from the novels, but am a big fan of the Chevy Chase character. I think this would be good casting if he signs on.

And for a second I thought the headline read " Jason Sudeikis in talks to be the new Flash for Warner Brothers".

Yeah...I could see him playing a good Fletch. He has that persona that the character and film would need.
