Kathryn Bigelow’s next directing gig is…

Since this past summer when THE HURT LOCKER hit theaters, people were immediately speculating on what director Kathryn Bigelow would do next. It almost seemed like she could have her choice of projects. Many people thought she’d be a perfect fit for the next James Bond film but she passed on that. She was offered the PLANET OF THE APES reboot at Fox and passed on that. All these months later, Bigelow has finally decided on her next directing gig. Sadly, it’s not a new movie (just yet).

Bigelow will direct the HBO pilot “The Miraculous Year” based on a script by writer John Logan (THE AVIATOR, GLADIATOR). The series is an original idea that would follow “a New York family as seen through the lens of a charismatic, self-destructive Broadway composer.” It’s not the kind of fare many would expect from Bigelow who’s been known to gravitate towards more gritty, action-oriented fare. But maybe that’s exactly why she’s doing it.

Bigelow has yet to decide on her next feature project, though she is attached to direct TRIPLE FRONTIER, an action-adventure pic about organized crime in South America. Filming on “Miraculous Year” is expected to begin early this summer.
