Movie Jail: This week's defendant is...Vince Vaughn!

Aug. 13, 2012by:

Welcome to Movie Jail, a facility like any other, only its inmates are Hollywood writers, directors, actors and producers. This column will serve as a Movie Jail trial. We will put one defendant on trial; lay out arguments for the Prosecution and Defense. And we leave it up to YOU, the reader, to decide whether the defendant is guilty of his or her crime. What crime? The crime of consistently being a stinking shithouse.

The Defendant

Vince Vaughn

The Case

The Prosecution: Fred Claus, Four Christmases, Couples Retreat, The Dilemma, The Watch.*

Ladies and gentleman of the jury, how much more mediocrity can we endure from Mr. Vaughn? Let's face it, the man has been serving entree portions of roast shit in the form of the above movies for years, and it doesn't look like the shit sandwiches will stop anytime soon. Since 2005's Wedding Crashers, he's had only one movie with a Fresh Tomato rating, 2007's Into the Wild, which was more Emile Hirsch's movie than Vaughn's. For a guy who started out his career with such promise and potential, how can we let Mr. Vaughn continue down this path? And if the last few years are any indication as to the path Mr. Vaughn is walking, what can we expect in the future?

The Defense: Swingers, Made, Clay Pigeons, Old School, Wedding Crashers, Dodgeball.*

Ladies and Gentleman of the jury, the defense makes no excuse for Couples Retreat or the dreadful Fred Claus. Homeboy's gotta eat. But really, all Mr. Vaughn has had is a bad couple of years. Yes, he hasn't had a huge audience favorite hit since Wedding Crashers, but let's look at what he's done in his career. Of course Swingers put him on the map, and we all know and love his turns in Old School and Anchorman. But what's important to note is his dramatic work in Clay Pigeons, The Locusts, and though the movie isn't considered great, his Norman Bates performance in the Psycho remake is. This just goes to show that he still has potential to win us over dramatically, and the defense sees this as definitely possible. Shit, even his turn in The Cell wasn't too bad. And if you're ever in a bar fight, there's no better dude to have on your side than the 6'5 Vince Vaughn. The defense sees these charges as frivolous considering what the man has brought to the silver screen, and moves for a not guilty verdict on all charges.

IN CLOSING...

So, whats to be done with Mr. Vince Vaughn? Do we accept mediocrity in this courtroom? Can we forgive mediocrity? Are Mr. Vaughn's crimes really all that bad or is he just having a bad couple of years? And the most important question to be asked, once all evidence is taken into consideration, we ask you The Jury, is Vince Vaughn GUILTY or NOT GUILTY? Lets hear YOUR arguments, either side, by STRIKING BACK BELOW.

*The court recognizes that all movies are subjective, so relax.

WHAT SAY YOU, GUILTY OR NOT?

LAST WEEK'S VERDICT

It is the jury's decision that after reviewing last week's evidence, the court finds Mr. Val Kilmer NOT GUILTY of all charges. The jury carefully detailed their love and respect for Mr. Kilmer and his career, and feels that with the right project, he can reclaim his rightful spot on the A list. But we're watching you, Iceman.

meh..

The list the defense has produced is compelling. Some great movies. Great performances. I think he's guilty of being lazy, won't hit the gym to pull the occasional action flick, and has been scared off from Drama's due to the lackluster box office performance of his previous attempts. So he'll play it safe and do stuff he thinks people want to see him in? OK. Well if Kilmer didnt go in I can't see how Vaughn should. I recommend Probation and a letter sent with our most urgent plea that he grow

Vince Vaughn maybe isn't the best for quality control. But I never feel insulted by him as an actor. Even when he overdoes the obnoxious alpha-male, which happens to be really funny to me. Unlike some comedians I don't avoid a movie because (*SHUDDER*) Vince Vaughn is in it. If I don't go see his movies it's for another reason altogether. Like Kevin James.

NOT GUILTY!

I feel bad for Vince. He's a great dramatic actor (Return to Paradise) but he never got rewarded for it so when he hit it big with Wedding Crashers he got type cast. And I'm slowly realizing that Rotten Tomatoes isn't the greatest barometer for quality; especially with comedies. Year One has a 15% and I found it unwatchable. The Watch has 17% and, while my expectations were higher, I found it entertaining.

NOT GUILTY! I love me some Vince Vaughn!

Though I would love to see him get back into some serious roles like Return to Paradise, I do find him consistently amusing in these comedies (even if he is coasting...). I think he was great in Four Christmases but since then the routine is getting a little stale.

As with Sandler and Murphy it's not only the bad lazy movies of which he is guilty, it's the wasted potential. Vaungh can be a very good actor and can be very funny but he is jerking around doing the same shtick in lame comedies.

Trial for; Francis Ford Coppola

It's a shame but other than Dodgeball he hasn't really impressed me and he's always playing the same character in nearly all his films, definately all the recent ones. So yeah, guilty.

Also Next Week - Ben Affleck. I brought it up on the podcast but I want to see what other people think, does a couple of great directing jobs make up for years of shit?

Guilty. The comedies he chooses are lamer every year...he rambles on too much in his improv to where it's no longer funny, just annoying. The more I see Wedding Crashers, the less funny it is. His "schtick" might have worked 10 years ago in a few movies but not anymore. He needs to do more raunchy comedies like Hangover style. But the reason why i say he's guilty is because I don't think the guy can really act, like Ben Stiller, he just plays himself over and over again in different movies. He

HOUSE ARREST!! He's been walking the line for years, he's leaning towards jail time but I'm going to let his next film or two decide his fate. He needs to get out of the comedy shit for awhile and do something that will show off his other abilities again. The guy has talent, I think he's just lazy.

Not guilty. Even in bad movies, he's still pretty funny. You can't blame Vaughn for the bad scripts that have been handed to him, even if he did make certain choices. He either thought he would be the funniest thing in the films he did or that he would enjoy making the film. I imagine many times it was both. And in many cases for the bad films he's done, he was right.

Not guilty. Even in some of his bad films, he's at least make them somewhat entertaining. I say put him on parole until he gets another great movie.

As for next week, if you do Vince you have to choose Ben Stiller, since they've been in about the same place career-wise for me. When was the last time Stiller had a legit hit. Recently all I remember is The Watch, Tower Heist, Night at the Museum 2, Little Fockers, etc. Just awful.

Lately he has been playing the same role. I say he's guilty of being incredibly lazy. He's very good in dramatic work and I he needs to get away from his Frat Pack association.

He still hasn't gone Eddie Murphy on us, or made something where he is as bad as the movie he is in. He at least looks like he tries in his movies, unlike Murphy or Adam Sandler at this point. But he is 1 or 2 movies away from GUILTY.

Guilty as charged

Vince Vaughn has taken his talent for granted, he has fallen almost into Adam Sandler territory of making pure crap "comedies" that aren't funny an d not playing any uniquely interesting characters. The only probation he could possibly get is playing a great and memorable character that stands out from all his other films. All he makes is crap with the same character. ---- At least Sandler TRIED with that love reign o'er me flick with Don Cheadle. (That was a long time ago.) Tip to actors

It's been said by everybody else, but he has coasting for so long now, I'm not sure he'd know how to take a risk at this point. The Watch was a new low, with him playing a carton exaggeration of his already exaggerated character.

While Vaughan has made some great films, and delivered some great performances (even in less than stellar films), unlike other defendants here, his legacy is still quite fresh, and seeing as how he seems content to just slide along and make crap after crap this early in his career, he is guilty as hell.

I'm not saying this guy should be exonerated from all the crap he has put out, but not all of his movies were that bad. Personally, I didn't think Couples Retreat and/or The Dilemma were horrible movies to sit back and watch at home on a rainy Saturday.

If people can say Val Kilmer of all the actors out there is not guilty of his recent movie crimes...then Vaughn should get a pass too.

Extra Tidbit: Dakota Fanning (What happened to that girl from Man on Fire?)

I love his earlier movies but...

Guilty.

His last few movies have been rehashes of previous characters, and most of his earlier work has had support of a great writing staff or co-stars. His latest films seem to rely heavily on him. While that doesnt make it his entire fault, he should learn to be more picky with his roles.

Sentence: Parole, reduce the number of movies being made and demote him to side-kick status (for now)

Next defendant: Sandra Bullock

Not really feeling the last few Movie Jails. I think you guys are reaching ever since you decided to make it weekly. Just my opinion but I think the weekly schedule is being emphasized over deservedness of nominees.
Kind of like monthly comics- the need to get them out monthly outweighs any kind of consistency or quality.

This was a tough call but I don't think his "bad" is as bad as other people's "bad." I feel his most recent movies are either good or mediocre. I agree though, he does do some good dramatic stuff (even if it's been awhile). One movie that I really enjoyed, which is not mentioned here, is "Return to Paradise."

Vince Vaughn may not make highly intellectual films, but he makes damn entertaining ones! I am constantly cracking one liners from Wedding Crashers. He does what he does well in The Dilemma, The Break-Up Dodgeball, Starsky and Hutch to name a few and has branched out and been perfectly acceptable The Cell, Jurassic Park 2 and Into the Wild. Let him walk freely on the streets of hollywood to keep making movies so we can all continue to laugh at the big goof!

Not Guilty

His movies haven't been great, but they haven't been atrocious either.

Vince is the same as he's ever going to be, from Old School to the Watch. His shtick might work better with some new elements, but when surrounded by other comic actors with tired shticks of their own, he'll fail.

Though his venture into PG-13 rom coms is mediocre and not nearly close to the best he can offer, they're just that - mediocre. Nothing cringeworthy (yet) that would lead me to say "c'mon."

Plus "I hope you flip your bike over and knock your two front teeth out, you selfish son of a bitch! You leave me in the trenches taking grenades, John!" is still one of my favorite movie quotes of all time.

Guilty!

He's done some funny movies but his bad movies are worse than his good movies are good, if that makes any sense.
