Rumor: New Green Lantern will be the John Stewart version, not Hal Jordan

04.17.2015

While the Peter Parker versus Miles Morales debate rages on, Warner Bros and DC Comics have seemingly made the decision to make the next big screen take on GREEN LANTERN to be about John Stewart rather than Hal Jordan. The rumor comes courtesy of Jeff Sneider on the latest episode of Meet the Movie Press. While unconfirmed, it would make sense if they want to distance themselves from the 2011 version of GREEN LANTERN starring Ryan Reynolds.

DC Comics has featured multiple iterations of human Green Lanterns, but John Stewart was the first African-American hero in their history. The character was assigned as a back-up to Hal Jordan when Guy Gardner was injured, making him the third Green Lantern in the comics continuity. He was not initially liked by Hal Jordan as he consider Stewart to be belligerent to authority figures. The Ryan Reynolds version of Hal Jordan was also somewhat belligerent so the filmmakers could elect to take this in a different direction.

Fans have dream casted everyone from Dwayne Johnson to Idris Elba in the role with some actors like Common and Tyrese lobbying for the role on social media. Whether this turns out to be true, the role would need to be cast soon to prepare for inclusion in the 2017 release of JUSTICE LEAGUE - PART 1. Who knows, maybe Warner Bros can convince Ryan Reynolds to cameo as Hal Jordan and have him hand over the ring to his successor?

JUSTICE LEAGUE - PART 1 hits theaters on November 17, 2017 while the new GREEN LANTERN is slated for June 19, 2020.

Guy Gardner or GTFO; cast him right, and he steals the movie away from everyone, the character is just that great. I'd love to see the Batman "one punch..." from JL (1987) #5 re-enacted. Sadly, we know that humour has no place in this universe...

Hal Jordan is a better Lantern in my opinion, but Stewart is cool too. As for Elba, I like him as much as the next guy but he has already made it known that playing super heroes isn't really his thing, plus there are other black actors. I think Lance Gross on the new show Crisis would be good, he has the look, the build, and he is the right age at 33 for several future films.

Shad Moss. Maybe Aldis Hodge from Leverage. I'm just trying to think outside the box.

Shad Moss as in Lil Bow Wow? That is a little too outside the box. There is no way to picture him as an architect and veteran U.S. Marine he still looks twelve!

For those who haven't read the comics

Reynold's portrayal of him was vastly different from Jordan's character in the comics. I'll take the comics Hal Jordan over the comics Jon Stewart any day. I get Marvel's logic in wanting to establish Peter Parker as Spider-Man in the MCU before branching out with Mile Morales, and I wish that WB would take a similar approach on this character. Stewart's a solid character, and I do want to see him on the screen at some point, I just want to see Jordan done properly and established in the

It HAS to be Idris Elba... Because he's the only black actor working today.

How the heck does the Peter Parker vs. Miles Morales debate rage on?

Do you guys not read your own articles? Because this site just posted a story like two days ago with a direct quote from Kevin Feige saying that the MCU Spider-Man will, without a doubt, be Peter Parker.

It's not going to stop the SJW hipsters from pissing and moaning about it. Otherwise, what would they talk about?

This just makes sense for many reasons. The JL have always been more worldly than the Avengers and need more diversity. If a governing body were to form the JL, it wouldn't be a shield type of organization, it would be something like the UN. I just hope we get a decent version of Hal Jordan some day. Too bad Dennis Quaid is too old. GL is basically a space cop, not a wise ass.

1) This is awesome news. I like John Stewart and it would be a nice change of pace to have his character as part of the Justice League.

2) I wish people would stop wishing that Ryan Reynolds' version would somehow by incorporated into the DCMU. It was a bad movie, his portrayal was alright, but everyone has moved on from it. Better to let it die and fade into obscurity.

I'm cool with it. Elba is the first choice for seemingly every black part now, but he really would be great. Maybe Heimdall takes him out of the running?

That screen cap looks exactly like Baron Davis, the old point guard for the Clippers.

I am torn. Personally, I love John Stewart from the JL cartoons, but at the same time I was hoping they would give Reynolds a 2nd go at being Hal. I didn't think he was a problem in the first movie (granted there were a lot) and had wanted to see him give it another shot under a better story or alongside Superman and Batman. I really like Green Lantern and think Snyder will do well regardless of which one they use.

Yes! This is the right move.

Now cast Ving Rhames and we're all set.

Little dissapointed by this. Hal Jordan is my favorite Green Lantern and was hoping if we didn't get a sequel with Reynolds returning then we would have at least have had a different version of the character in the new DC Snyder Universe.

And the Chris Pine rumor of being the new Hal Jordan would have been terrific casting. But if they can somehow get Reynolds to return to pass down the ring for continuity purposes to Stewart, then I could live with that (even though it would be unlikely at

so you don't like Hal from the comics? its just the movie you like? Reynolds played him like a goof and that's not what Hal jordon should be.

I do like Hal from the comics. Granted, Hal shouldn't be a goof, but I thought Reynolds made for a good Hal Jordan/Green Lantern. It's just the story that could have been better.

If DC want to distance themselves from the Green Lantern movie (may well have been my least favorite movie seen at the cinema that year had Pirates 4 not come out!), then going with a completely different character is the way to go. My only comic book experience of Green Lantern is the ginger jerk Gardner with the very bad hair style and that was only in the Death of Superman comics - most of my experience comes with Stewart from the animated series who played it like a 'by the book' guy and

I was never too sure what Hal's character was supposed to be like since his animated versions differ so much and then the movie made him out to be somewhat of a bighead - not really hero material so I couldn't work out what made him so worthy. At the end, I don't really care so long as no one starts talking about going with Gardener!

Makes sense...

I preface this by saying I've never read it, but I did like the Justice League cartoon. Stewart was a stern, boring, hardass... which fits in perfectly in the DC universe. Hal Jordan seems more "Marvelly" if you will... but again, i could be basing that off the fact Ryan Reynolds played him

I think, I can never earn over which I paid by my precedent employer, but I was wrong, world is so large to try their fate.but now I am making $92/hr even more, can easily minimum $1700/week, on the experience everyone must try to do work online, easy way to earn, here's an example what I do... www.globe-report.com

I hope Ryan Reynolds has a small part...

He hands over the ring saying "it just didn't fit" or "I hope you have better success"

Common was cast as John Stewart in the failed George Miller JLA project a few years back. Between him and Tyrese, Common is a way better actor and far more intriguing screen presence. He'd still be my pick.
