Shane Black will direct the return of Remo Williams in The Destroyer

08.21.2014

Rejoice fans! Remo Williams is returning to the big screen! Sony Pictures announced today that IRON MAN 3 director Shane Black will direct the big budget adaptation of THE DESTROYER, the novel series starring Remo Williams!

REMO WILLIAMS: THE ADVENTURE BEGINS was the sole outing for the action hero. Since 1985, fans have been clamoring for the return of the character to cinemas. While Fred Ward may be too old to headline, Shane Black and FIGHT CLUB screenwriter Jim Uhls will do their best to uphold the popular character for a new generation. There is no word on who may star in the film, but it will certainly be a big film with franchise potential for Sony.

If you are one of those unlucky few who don't know who Remo Williams is, here is a rundown.

Newark cop Remo Williams is framed, sentenced to death, then resurrected following a botched execution. The reason? To serve as enforcement arm for CURE, a top-secret, extra-Constitutional arm of the U.S. government. Along with a seemingly ageless – and often hilarious – Asian assassin known only as Chiun, Williams sets out to "clean up" and take out those who oppose America’s interests. The surprisingly-heartfelt stories combine edgy old-school suspense with Eastern mysticism to produce unique, rapid-fire capers full of slick banter, social satire, and sudden violence.

There is no word on how this will affect Black's developing DOC SAVAGE film, but you can imagine that with Warner Bros launching their own franchise based on THE EXECUTIONER series of novels, THE DESTROYER is going to be fast-tracked. With 37 novels featuring the character, there is plenty to play with or come up with an all new plot for the feature film.

REMO WILLIAMS: THE ADVENTURE BEGINS has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. It is completely ridiculous, over the top, and even has Wilford Brimley! I may have to go pull out my DVD to celebrate!

Fuck yeah! I used to read The Destroyer series as a kid, and left off somewhere into the 120's. Hopefully Shane mixes Kiss, Kiss, Bang,Bang with a bit of The Long Kiss Goodnight. Noir mixed with cheeky humor is definitely the right tone.

If we're getting a tinge of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in this, that will be awesome.

I just hope and would love for them to keep the Newark setting. It'd be great to see more movies take place in my hometown.

I loved Fred Ward in Remo, he had the right balance of tough guy and comedic timing.
I can't of a current actor with the same qualities but wouldn't mind seeing someone like Sam Rockwell bulk up and have a go at it.
Otherwise maybe Jake Gylenhaal.

yes, please

Remo is made for Black !
As long as it's closer to the film than to that pos TV pilot !
If he can pull the American accent, Scott Adkins could be great in the part, IMO.

Yah it was cheesball but Chuin was hilarious. I saw a bit of the TV pilot and that looked dreadful, hopefully they can keep some of the humor and modernize it a bit.

I've been waiting for Remo Williams to return for years! Black is a great fit. Perhaps Fred Ward can return in the Wilford Brimley role? I'm gonna pull my DVD off the shelf and give it a watch.

This is pretty great. I'd love if Ward was in it, or at least had a cameo. The original was one of my favorites as a kid. I need to dig it out and watch it now.

When I was a kid, I used to try to copy Remo running across water. It didn't work out to well, but I'm looking forward to a new movie.

That's good news but maybe I missed something here, wasn't he supposed to direct a new predator film?

I didn't like Iron man 3 that much, but I love the idea of bringing back the Destroyer.
I loved the film as a kid and I recently started reading the books (I am on book 4) they are very brisk reads (even for the A.D.D. generation) and I cannot wait to see a new film version.
Shane could do a good job with the action and humor (my iron man 3 issues are more with the story rather than the action etc).

Fred Ward or bust

I always thought Remo deserved a second chance. Especially since this is obviously a movie themed around X-Mas like every other Shane Black film.
