Casting announcements for JJ Abrams' upcoming STAR TREK have finally been materializing in the transporter, but aside from the additions of Simon Pegg as Scotty and Eric Bana as whoever, they haven't seemed to stir much excitement for the dry-docked franchise.

And now it seems the the Enterprise crew (circa 30 years prior to Roddenberry's version) is nearly complete. Sci-fi and genre warrior Karl Urban (DOOM, THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK, LOTR) will put away his various weaponry to do a little healing -- the scruffy Kiwi will report to Starfleet Medical as cantankerous Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy.

Early rumors suspected Urban would play the villain in the thus-far-Shatnerless reboot, but that role went to Bana. The only major (?) character that remains a mystery seems to be Christopher Pike.

Extra Tidbit: Urban already has a TREK connection: he starred with Walter "Chekov" Koenig in the TV movie THE PRIVATEERS.

DON'T LIKE
WOW, what a bad casting choice. First the Princess Diaries guy, now this schlep. This is starting to look like an episode of One Tree Hill.

Okay ... first off, I like Karl Urban. He's got a pretty bad-ass presence, and could probably win a staring contest with a cat. But as McCoy? Seriously?

I first started getting worried about this film when the director was announced. I've seen "Lost" and "MI:3," and during neither of them did I have the thought that, "Damn, this guy could make a great Star Trek movie!" Now...

I first started getting worried about this film when the director was announced. I've seen "Lost" and "MI:3," and during neither of them did I have the thought that, "Damn, this guy could make a great Star Trek movie!" Now the cast has been (mostly) announced, and with the exception of Eric Bana, they're all sort of ... odd. I mean, we've got a Tremor Brother as Kirk, Shaun of the Dead as Scotty, Harold as Sulu, and now [link] as McCoy. What they should have done was go with a bunch of unknowns, and start a new show with them if the film is successful. This just seems, well, it seems like they're trying to make a "Star Trek" movie for people who don't like "Star Trek." Give it a "hip, young cast" and (probably) a shit-load of explosions. It just feels wrong.

Hmmm
I am a Star Trek fan and I am really excited for this much-needed new take on the franchise. I have found all the casting so far to be GREAT - although Urban puzzles me. In the other roles they seemed to be looking for people who really looked/fit the part - I'm not sure Urban fits Bones too well. He is too action-star macho. Hopefully he can tone that down a bit and make a convincing doctor.

Bones, give me a reading
"What business does a Vulcan, a Man and a Tribble have in my sickbay? Speak quickly!!" I'm still jazzed about JJ Abrams version/re-invention of the Trek franchise but since when was Bones more of a stud than Kirk?

set phasers for FUN !
I...uh...wow. Talk about coming out of left field.

I've only seen him in action roles so I won't speak for his character work but he does seem to command presence on screen. I'm no Trekkie but here's hoping this pans out to be slightly watchable.

Eomer saying, "I'm a doctor, not a mechanic!"??? I don't see it, and I haven't seen Urban in enough movies to know if he has the acting chops. But I'm neutral shading to "bad idea" on this for now.
