Will you bite for AMC's healthy concessions?

4 years agoby:

Is your fat ass tempted by all the boundless delights that movie theaters have to offer at concessions? Well never fear, AMC is stepping up to offer you a healthy alternative, which you will consider for one second before immediately choosing your popcorn as usual.

The face of movie theater food has been pretty constant for a while now, popcorn, soda, candy, hot dogs, etc, all for a grand total that costs more than your ticket. Well now AMC is doing something to combat all that crap ravaging your body as opposed to just your wallet.

“By bringing healthier snacks into your concession stands, you would be helping our country meet an urgent public health need. Taking this step is also great for audiences and for your business, because people want to see healthier foods in theaters, and when they do, they’ll buy them.”

Will they?

The "AMC Smart MovieSnacks" pack seen above offers "Chiquita Fruit Chips made of pure fruit, a 20-ounce Dasani purified water, an Odwalla Bar of Chocolate Chip Trail Mix and PopCorners all-natural air-popped corn chips." all for $7. Not bad when you consider how much most stuff costs at the theater.

Deadline says that this offering is being balanced by a price hike in unhealthier offerings to make them prohibitive to buy, like cigarettes. I can't tell if this is a joke or not, but all I can see that doing is making people with low self control poorer.

Would you buy "healthy" food from your movie theater?

Extra Tidbit: How about they just reduce the sizes so a small popcorn isn't as big as my head?

don't know how i feel about them calling these snacks "smart." if i want to fill myself with fat and preservatives while watching a movie, then buying this would be pretty fucking stupid.

I like the idea but still too expensive. I'll continue to sneak in my own food.

Fad

If they really cared about offering good, healthy food it would be fresh. Not pre-packaged, preservative-laden crap. "Honey, let's get some trail mix and fruit chips to go with our King-Size Twix and 44 oz. Pibb Extra." It's great offering a choice, these items need to be fresh. It might be a step in the direction, but if you're going to embrace a fad, truly embrace it, no camp hugs.

And there are tastier, healthy snacks than fruit and water.

Do you really expect a movie theater to open a fresh fruit market???

I'm ALL for offering healthy snacks, but I'd much rather eat some fruit and drink water than these particular options. Still, the effort is valiant.

People, myself included, need to lose weight and get healthier. Period.

Why does this news have such a low rating!? I don't get it? Are there people who actually are against healthy snacks!?

If the article said: AMC to replace popcorn, nachos and sodas with fruits and water I would understand. But I'm down with healthy snacks in theaters. It's just an extra option. No one if forcing any of you fat fucks to eat something that is actually good for you! :o)

Good, now we just need to start forcing people to make healthier options. Look, I'm all for being able to choose whatever you want, but most people are like children when it comes to having the will power to say no to the wrong things. And like Children, they need to be forced to make certain decisions. I say force people to be healthy if they can't do it themselves. They will be thankful for it later on.

With that said, I will probably give this a shot. I am often tempted by the things at

Yay healthier options!!

My profile pic doesn't really tell you much about me. But before that pic was taken I was 260 LBs. Over the course of a year or so I lost 66 LBs. That was me at 194 and I owe it all to willpower. I still ate/eat junk food ocasionally like when I go to a movie. I just don't eat very much before I go to the movie or after. So I can enjoy some yummy salty cheesy nachos. I might consider the healthy options the next time i'm in line. Also AMC has calorie content listed next to each item on the menu

I'm giving this a green just cause I'm all for the slimming down of America. But like a few others said why would anyone buy food at the theater when you can just sneak it in? I couldn't tell you the last time I actually bought snacks at the theater. Furthermore I never understood the need to eat a hot dog or nachos during a movie. Seriously you can't wait two hours to stuff your face? To each their own I guess. I prefer the art of sneaking in my food. My favorite being the four loko I snuck in

WTF?!

Get that cardboard tasting crap outta my theater. Give me the gallon size of artificial buttered flavored defoaming agent popcorn and 1/2 gallon of soda for $20.00 (well, you could reduce size a bit like mentioned in other comments to a regular size and save me a little money, the tix are expensive enough).

Trouble is with these oversized buckets of pop corn is half the shit ends up on the floor anyway. Could you imagine what the cinemas would have to do if people actually ate all their pop corn instead of smearing it into the seats and floor. They would have to increase the size of the chairs for a start so fat as...... OVERSIZED people can fit comfortably in their chairs.

It's good of them to offer healthy alternatives, but I don't see why movie theater snacks have to be so unhealthy in the first place. An indie theater in my city offers kettle corn, pretzels, nuts, and normal non-"movie size" candy for decent prices. I don't need greasy, 8000 calorie popcorn or a giant bucket of Coke to keep me happy. Of course, the indie theater has beer too. And the tickets are only $6. So that has a lot to do with my patronage.

All that stuff has a lot of sugar and carbs and are as BAD for you if not worse than popcorn. Idiots.

I just wish AMC would put back their "Movie Watcher" program instead of this rip-off Stubs crap they're pedaling.

I'm all for adding healthy eating alternatives but this looks like a way to appease the FDA while they are currently battling with cinema owners to meet the nutritional labelling requirement for popcorn.

Why does AMCs large popcorn need to have as many calories as 3 Big Macs?!?

People deserve to know what the hell they are eating.

Almost all of a theaters profits come from concession sales so think about that the next time you decide to sneak things in to your favorite theater. I wonder what would happen if everybody did the same thing. I guess you can always wait for the DVD release.

I NEVER eat or drink at the show

to each his own...healthy or otherwise...but i cant eat or drink at the show. cant hear with the crunch and likely have to piss. (not to mention prices!) id rather sit tight, (for 2hrs!) concentrate on the movie and hit BK or Taco Bell afterwards.

A perfect example that people have no self control. Instead of choosing to NOT eat in a theater at all, they demand an alternative because the day old hotdogs are too tempting.

This wont work for the same reason McDonalds serving "healthy alternatives" doesn't work. Because people don't go to the movies to eat healthy. I generally eat healthy everyday so when I go to the movies, or somewhere like McDonalds I want to eat junk. Its part of the fun of going to the movies in the first place. As long as you do it in moderation it'll be fine.

I dont like food in the theather PERIOD. The popcorn sounds to crunchy when 50 people are eating it at one time, then candy wrappers get noisy when people crinkle them. Its annoying, especially during quiet toned movies like Coen brothers or horror films with little to no soundtrack.

I bring food (or beer if my girlfriend is there with her giant purse), and I certainly get that people think this is useless, but why all the hate? I would gladly prefer to spend $7 on all that than spend $7 on the giant popcorn or $5 on the refillable Coke. Every once-in-a-while people are stuck hungry at a movie, and this is way better than the shitty nachos and hot dogs.

Plus, the Dasani is refillable at the water fountain!

Who is this really for the critics? I mean who aside form movie critics spend enough time in a theater to have their over priced goodies actually make more then 1% of their diet? Personally i can't even remember the last time i dropped funds on food at the theater, i eat first or after.

That sucks that it cost's that much in some places, at the amc's in San Diego full price for a ticket is 10.75, 8.75 before 4, and 6 before 12, the only time movie's cost that much are for 3D, or Imax, at least in San Diego. Movies take about 3 months to come out on dvd at the earliest not 2. Also just because one theatre, or just the one's in your area are bad does not mean all amc's have terrible customer service.

Yes I know that price's vary in different locations, I was just stating how much less it cost's in San Diego. Also it may cost 13.50, but people can always go before 12 and pay only 6 for a regular movie, and about 10 for imax/3D even in a theater in New York. If you don't believe me you can look it up.

I understand there are good fats and bad fats but adding chocolate to nuts is still ridiculous to me. Nuts are loaded with good fats but you still gain weight if you eat them too much since they're packed with fats(even though they're high in protein).

I suppose I would actually, as long as they keep Icee's available cos I'll fight anyone who tries to take away my icee. That's all I tend to get at the cinema these days. The monsters at my cinema no longer sell Gummi Bears which in itself is a crime against nature. No gummi bears means no sweeties for me I'm afraid. In fact, fuck the healthy food, I want my gummi bears, bouncing here and there and everywhere....
