Tom Hardy posts first photo from Al Capone biopic, Fonzo

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Tom Hardy is known for going deep into gritty, tough characters like in MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, THE REVENANT, BRONSON and more. Chances are he will be going down the same route for the upcoming Al Capone biopic, FONZO, which will see Hardy playing the notorious gangster. The actor posted the first photo of him getting into character, and he certainly looks ready to whack a few poor souls. If there’s anyone you don’t wanna f**k with, it’s Tom Hardy playing Al Capone.

The actor posted the photo on his Instagram page, and though there are some elements that may not make it into the final cut (I don’t think Capone had that large of a tattoo on his arm), this is probably close to how his character will look in the movie.

The movie will reportedly cover Capone’s life at the age of 47 after he’s already established himself and one of the most famous gangsters in history, and after he’s served time in jail. The movie will then find Capone as  “dementia rots Alfonse’s mind and his past becomes present as harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life,” according to a press release.

FANTASTIC FOUR and CHRONICLE’s Josh Trank is writing and directing the movie which will also star Linda Cardellini, Jack Lowden, Matt Dillon, and Kyle McLachlan.

As for Hardy, of course he looks awesome in the role. Every iteration of the character we've seen is of this portly fellow with a slick hair cut and a three-piece suit, like Robert De Niro in THE UNTOUCABLES. This version looks to show him at his weakest and most mentally vulnerable, and offer a glimpse into his last years that most people don't know about. This is great because I certainly like my Hardy complex and challenging, not buried underneath a fat suit.

FONZO could see a release as early as this year
