Chris Columbus’ 1492 Pictures picks up Troll Hunter remake rights

Last Updated on July 23, 2021

We reported back in March that producer Chris Columbus was teaming up with THE TROLL HUNTER director André Øvredal for a monster comedy, but it’s now apparent that Columbus’ interest in Øvredal’s work goes beyond that. Columbus’ 1492 Pictures has partnered with CJ Entertainment & Media to acquire remake rights to TROLL HUNTER.

“Troll Hunter was a visceral, thrilling cinematic rock and roller coaster ride of a movie. Visually, there are scenes in this film that American audiences have never seen. We want to introduce an international audience to this amazing moviegoing experience!” said Columbus.

First time writer Marc Haimes will pen the script. Original producer John M. Jacobsen will produce along with his partner Sveinung Golimo, as well as Columbus and his 1942 partners Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe. No word on if Øvredal is on board.

Columbus made a name for himself by writing GREMLINS and went on to direct and produce the first two HARRY POTTER films, among others. Do you trust him with this remake? The 2010 Norwegian film opens today at Village East Cinemas in New York, with additional cities following in the coming weeks.

Shot in a vérité style, TROLL HUNTER is the story of a group of Norwegian film students that set out to capture real-life trolls on camera after learning their existence has been covered up for years by a government conspiracy. A thrilling and wildly entertaining film, TROLLHUNTER delivers truly fantastic images of giant trolls wreaking havoc on the countryside, with darkly funny adherence to the original Norwegian folklore.
