Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar signed an exclusive multiple-year overall deal with Netflix when their sci-fi thriller series Dark proved to be a hit for the streaming service. They managed to tell a complete, three season story with that show. But their next series, the epic mystery horror 1899, didn’t fare so well. In fact, 1899 has been cancelled after just one season.

The series creators confirmed the cancellation on social media, releasing the following statement: “With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned. That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget.

1899, which was said to be “built like a puzzle” like Dark was, revolves around a migrant steamship heading west to leave the old continent from London to New York. The passengers, a mixed bag of European origins, are united by their hopes and dreams for the new century and their future abroad. When they discover another migrant ship adrift on open sea, their journey takes an unexpected turn. What they find on board will turn their passage to the promised land into a horrifying nightmare.

The show stars Anton Lesser (Game of Thrones), Alexandre Willaume (The Wheel of Time), Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk), Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen (The Rain), Mathilde Ollivier (Overlord), Miguel Bernardeau (Elite), Clara Rosager (Morbius), Richard Hope (Broadchurch), and Jonas Bloquet (Elle).

Have you watched 1899 yet? If so, are you disappointed that the show won’t be continuing, or were you not into it anyway? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below. I don’t have an opinion on it, because I have never watched an episode of 1899 or Dark. Netflix is so quick to cancel, it makes me hesitant to even attempt to watch some shows they release.
