After the debut season of the sci-fi thriller series Dark was a hit for Netflix, the show’s creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar signed an exclusive multiple-year overall deal with the streaming service. Dark has since wrapped up its three season run, and now Friese and Odar are bringing a new series to Netflix: an epic mystery horror series called 1899. Netflix hasn’t announced a premiere date for 1899 yet, but they have unveiled a trailer for the show, and you can watch that in the embed above.

1899, which is said to be “built like a puzzle” like Dark was, revolves around

a migrant steamship heading west to leave the old continent from London to New York. The passengers, a mixed bag of European origins, are united by their hopes and dreams for the new century and their future abroad. When they discover another migrant ship adrift on open sea, their journey takes an unexpected turn. What they find on board will turn their passage to the promised land into a horrifying nightmare.

The show stars Anton Lesser (Game of Thrones), Alexandre Willaume (The Wheel of Time), Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk), Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen (The Rain), Mathilde Ollivier (Overlord), Miguel Bernardeau (Elite), Clara Rosager (Morbius), Richard Hope (Broadchurch), and Jonas Bloquet (Elle).

The original plan had been to film 1899 in Spain, Poland, Scotland, and various other locations, but in the age of the pandemic the production decided to stay put at Studio Babelsberg in Germany and shoot the show with virtual production / Volume technology. The same technology used on The Mandalorian.

I’m out of the loop on Dark, I haven’t watched any of that show yet, but 1899 looks interesting to me. When Netflix announces the release date, we’ll share the news here on Arrow in the Head.
