1973 is the year for X-men: Days of future past

At one point Matthew Vaughn had talked about using JFK’s assassination in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST in a similar fashion that the Cuban Missile Crisis was used in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS. Looks like that’s not going to happen based on the casting call that is up at Comic Book Movie that says the film will mostly be set in 1973. That means that there is a ten year gap between X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.

What could that mean for historical references that may be used in the new film? If you take a look at the list of major events of 1973, several stand out:

1.The end of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. It was kind of a big deal. There are a million different ways they could tie that ugly and draining war to the events of the film, so I’ll leave it to you to speculate.

2. Watergate Scandal. Maybe Nixon had people break in to find secret mutant documents? Or it wasn’t Nixon but he got blamed?

3. Skylab, America’s first space station is launched as well as plenty of other space related things. TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON used the moon landing, so it could work for X-MEN.

4. Elvis Presley Hawaii concert. That’s right: The King’s a mutant.

There’s been plenty of news on the time-travel extravaganza this week, and it’s not going to stop anytime soon. X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is out July 18th, 2014.
