As much as I try my damndest, I can’t be in full support of AFTER DARK’S HORRORFEST, which is apparently gearing up for a third theatrical go-round, despite the intensely mixed-to-negative results of the first two attempts.
Of course you can’t dislike the idea – where a mini-festival is programmed into theaters for one week, showcasing independent horror flicks that would otherwise be sent directly to DVD. And yet I feel like the studio’s approach has been all wrong. First their decision to release it in November – I don’t care how intimidated by SAW you are, this is meant to be shown in October. Second, most of the films just aren’t very good, and the few gems that are get lost in the shuffle (ex. last year’s MULBERRY ST. – which would have benefited from a separate release, in my opinion). The whole thing is tantamount to just another dumping…
Nevertheless, Dread Central is reporting that the first film of HORRORFEST 3 has been chosen: THE BROKEN, starring the lovely Lena Headey. (Check out our last article on it HERE!)
THE BROKEN is about a woman whose life descends into a nightmare after she sees an apparent double of herself driving by in her own car. Certainly sounds a bit off the beaten track for After Dark, and there’s nothing wrong with that. You know that old expression, if it IS broken….
in addition, it would seem that After Dark will actually set forth two originals this time, meaning the 8 FILMS TO DIE FOR won’t be filled strictly with acquisitions. Again, nice change of pace… Let’s hope they keep it up and give us a pleasant surprise this fall. (October, please ; )
