One of the biggest blips on the horror movie radar right now is 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, based on the graphic novel about a bad-ass pack of vampires who take over an Alaskan town – while the sun hibernates for a month – and terrorize Josh Hartnett (good) and Melissa George (don’t hurt her you bastards!).
NEWSARAMA has an interview with the man in charge of bringing the Steve Niles’ book to the big screen, David Slade (HARD CANDY). Slade is now mired in post-production as the film gets ready for its October 19 release.
Those worried that 30 DAYS won’t get the proper treatment can relax, says Slade, who is promising fans of the book that his vision will be very close to Steve Niles and (artist) Ben Templesmith’s, saying:
“…suffice to say if you have read the graphic novel there won’t be too many shocks. We stuck fairly closely to Steve Niles story and he is getting a writing credit.”
“It is in the place I hoped which is a kind of netherworld between a harsh reality and the beautiful stylistic artwork of Ben Templesmith. It has great dramatic performances as well as a great big huge dose of deep red horror.”
“Aesthetically, I was driven by Ben’s artwork. We retained as many of Ben’s character designs as we could, and overall, the Barrow of the graphic novel, and the look of the colours, will translate into the film. In one case, down to the patterns on a character’s fabric.”
Pretty good news. Having recently obtained 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, I can say that if indeed the movie’s look and overall feel is similar to that of the book, it’ll be one creeped-out experience.
Even more significantly, Slade goes out on a limb to say:
“I think we have managed to re-invent the vampire genre.”
