What the hell do we make of this new Mel Gibson picture? The dude hasn’t rocked a starring role in almost a full decade, and this is the one he’s marked for a comeback? Okay then, but I’m still waiting for the punch-line. I mean, if Mel is out to prove he ain’t a washed up shadow of his former self, why the hell do all the TV spots look as if Mel is, well, a washed up shadow of his former self? How intriguing.
And in the 4 fresh clips we have below from the film, not much is shown to dispel such an assertion. He doesn’t look reinvigorated or show a renewed sense of purpose. The dude looks sad, tired, and frankly a bit over his head. Of course it’s the character that calls for such adjectives, but one can’t help see the parallels in Mel’s current and recent off-screen endeavors. I guess what I’m getting at…did Mel accept the role to mirror his own EDGE OF DARKNESS? Just a thought.
The lineage is in place here to be a decent flick though: we’ve got the director of CASINO ROYALE and the upcoming GREEN LANTERN film (Martin Campbell), the writers of THE DEPARTED (William Monahan) and LANTANA (Andrew Bovell), as well as a stable of top flight supporting players like Ray Winstone, Denis O’Hare and Danny Huston. Therefore this has to be a good movie, right?
